Anika Fajardo All of my books are inspired in some way by my own experience as a Colombian-born Minnesotan. Where I come from and where I live are the biggest sources of material for me.
Anika Fajardo I'm inspired by life, both my own and the lives of those around me. I pay attention, try to stay off social media, and live in the moment.
Anika Fajardo Anyone who wants to be a writer should be reading! Read as much as you can, both within and outside of the genre in which you want to write. Like basketball players or rock stars, writers also need to practice. Luckily, practicing for writers doesn't mean scales or sprints; it means writing.
Anika Fajardo Writer's block happens to everyone! I like to get outside, read a good book, hang out with friends and family, or travel. All of these things help my mind relax and inspire my storytelling.
Anika Fajardo I write books for all ages! My most recent novel The Many Mothers of Dolores Moore is women's fiction/upmarket book club. Waiting on a Miracle: A Twisted Tale is for YA audiences. My middle-grade novels include Encanto: A Tale of Three Sisters, Meet Me Halfway, and What If a Fish. My first book was Magical Realism for Non-Believers, a memoir appropriate for teens and adults.
Anika Fajardo The best thing about being a writer is connecting with readers. I love hearing from readers who see a piece of themselves in my story--whether it's because we're very similar or very different. I think people are drawn to memoir because finding out about other people's lives (whether you find them quirky, inspiring, or even boring) teaches us about ourselves and the world in which we live.
Anika Fajardo I'm currently getting my debut middle-grade novel ready. WHAT IF A FISH, the story of half-Colombian, half-Minnesotan Eddie Aguado who just wants to win a fishing contest. But when an unexpected illness brings him to Colombia, he's not sure what he's going to find. Simon & Schuster, 2020.
