Iain Pattison Hi John

A bit like a rolling pin, a pun can be a wonderful tool or a deadly weapon. It all depends whose hands it's in. I understand why puns have such a bad name - all those awful "Snow Joke" newspaper headlines in winter, magazine advertising for Easter events that promise Eggs-tra Special fun and Xmas cracker broken window jokes that are a pane...

However, I prefer to think of them as part of the wonderful array of wickedly clever word play and semantic satire that marks out British humour. They are part of my comic armoury.

For example, I'm thinking of writing a blog post about the weird assortment of people who seem to inhabit Twitter - at least invade my feed - who offer get-rich-quick schemes, pictures of their pet cats or even more embarrassing picture of young nubile women in various states of undress. The blog would be titled Liars, Tigers and Bares, Oh My!

Okay, okay. As Frankie Howerd would say - please yourself.
