John Walsh How I became an accidental author...now working on my fifth book!
John Walsh The book’s I write often coincide with a film that is being reassessed or restored for a rerelease, and as such, I sign NDAs, which mean I can’t discuss them until nearer the publication date. So I refer to them by numbers. Working on book 4, with book 5 waiting and two further ones in the not too distant future.
John Walsh Have an interest in an associated field. I was and remain a filmmaker and write in that medium too. Books came rather late for me, but it wasn’t something I pursued. The time and project were right, and the first book happened. That was published in 2019. I am about to finish my fourth book earlier than planned as the fifth one is waiting for me to start. Having an interest or connection with your subject is vital for you to bring something of yourself and lift your book above others in the same field or on the same subject.
John Walsh I like the independence. You are the captain of your own ship to a great extent. Also, in my case, writing non-fiction is a way of revisiting the past in detail. Discoveries are always there to be found.
John Walsh I set myself a daily target that might not sound that creative, but it disciplines your mind and helps you avoid distractions from emails.
John Walsh I wake up at night to go to the bathroom; when I get back to my bed, I see myself already in bed asleep. So I don’t know if I should wake myself up or wait till morning.
John Walsh It would have to be Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles. I want to revisit my own past through the filter of a Martian voyeur.
John Walsh Anything by JW Rinzler. I am mostly a non-fiction fan.
John Walsh I am a television and film writer so being inspired is down to me having a commissioned work to focus on. If it’s a pitch it helps to listen to soundtrack music for me. I have a few favourites including Bernard Herrmann and John Barry.
John Walsh I was asked to write the book on the making of Escape From New York to coincide with this year’s 40th anniversary of the film. It helps I was already a big fan of the film and its director.
