Honestly, the idea began back during the days of Xena. While I loved Xena & Gabrielle, I wanted to write about that sort of time period where it was a mish-mash of divergent timelines. So the two side companions sort of became my version of Xena and Gabrielle while the two main characters of Kat and Tristien were the story I wanted to tell.

For the relationship scenes, I just allow my imagination to kick in. However, for the action sequences, I end up watching a lot of HK action flicks. Sometimes, I'll sneak a TVB serial in there, but those don't have the action sequences I need for my books. To be honest, I usually rely on old Shaw Brothers movies because the kung fu in there is more based on reality than recent movies who use quick cuts to give the illusion of martial arts.

Learn about the world and about different forms of storytelling. Figure out why something that works in comics, doesn't work as a short story and vice verse. Understand pacing in different forms of art, like music and dance. In short, experience different things.

Visiting other worlds and being lost there. My wife often accuses me of not being here which is true because I'm there instead. Being a writer gives me an excuse to be there.

I sit and write. Sometimes, I'll surf to free my mind, but mostly, I force myself to sit and write. At random times, having a forced (albeit fake) deadline helps like, saying to myself "You only have two hours tonight to write." I can't emphasize enough, how giving yourself no way out and allowing yourself the luxury to only write 5 words, helps.

Since "A Slice of Quietude" is the first book of the Woven Myths series, I'm working on the second title of the series, tentatively named, "Thwarted Wills."
