Wimsey was a tremendously charismatic dog and one day as I was walking him in Central Park I thought what a good guide he would make to the park. That evolved into him being a tour guide for kids visiting New York City. Also, when I was learning to read I read a comic book where the main character visited Washington, DC. There were assorted facts about all the sites and monument where the character wreaked havoc and I was able to astonish my parents with my knowledge on a subsequent family trip to DC. So short, interesting descriptions, narrated by a comical bloodhound with accompanying photos will hopefully help kids learn and remember things about New York. I like to think of the book as subversively educational.

Writing for me is hardwired--I've been doing it since I learned my letters. The first essay I every wrote (a description of short film strip about peanut growing it Africa) was read aloud by my third grade teacher. It was one short page but had a topic sentence, a developed middle and a conclusion. No one ever taught me that--it's just how I saw the world.

I am working on a humorous account of what it's like to live with and take care of a giant, comically awful bloodhound in the middle of Manhattan.

Write as often as possible and edit. Sometimes less is more--too many ideas or clever phrases dilute the most important ones.

The best thing about being a writer is entertaining people and making them smile on a bad day. I also like creating a world where bad things don't happen or exist. (can you tell I write humor?)

I exercise or engage in some other activity for a while until it clears. Forcing myself to write through can be useful but the quality of the writing usually means I will have to redo it when unblocked.
