It was the perfect day to make jam in my 19th century kitchen, and I sang to myself as I tied on my apron over my floral wrapper and stirred the fire in my woodstove. Just as I reached for the first basket of ripe black cherries, I woke up - and it had only been a dream!

(view spoiler)[I'm not sure if I should mark this question as a spoiler or not, but are you planning to release The Storyteller sometime next year? *grins hopefully* I'm looking forward to reading the rest of that, so I was just wondering how long it would be? :) (hide spoiler)]

Oh, Bethany, I'd sure like to! But we'll have to see. There's a few more short stories to round up and edit first!

My most recent book was inspired by the first phrase of a simple prayer: "Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord..."
Set in London during the Blitz of World War 2, it combines the action of the RAF with the tension of civilians caught in the middle of an epic battle - The Battle of Britain.
To be published soon!

Bethany, I'm so glad you asked! I can't reveal much right now, but there is a very exciting announcement coming soon for a brand new book - and I am so eager to share it with you all!

I would go to the seashore with Aunt Crete and Donald from Aunt Crete's Emancipation. I think Donald would buy us all ice creams and we could go for a long drive along the coast, stopping by grand hotels all the way. Then we'd return to The Traymore so the ladies could change into cool silk gowns with real lace collars for dinner and a concert by Sousa. Ahhh!

It is a difficult question, so I took some time thinking it through. The result is that I think they are all my favorites! Probably the one that has the most special place in my heart is 'My Mother - My Teacher' which will always be attached to the wonderful memory of presenting it to my mother on Mother's Day and seeing her face when she began to read it - makes me tear up a little just thinking about it! It is so special that you can look through the entire book for free on my website here: http://thehomegrownhistorian.com/book...
'The Apprentices' is another #1 for me, because I so enjoyed researching and writing it; but 'Our Christmas Bear' ties with it for the sheer fun of writing about children, a Christmas theme, and the little bit of clean romance that adds a special warmth.
So there you are! Maybe as a writer who publishes independently, you could say I don't publish unless it is a favorite; so that minimalizes the iconic famous-book-that-the-author-didn't-like experience!
Thank you for the question! It was very thought provoking.

I tend to have two or more projects in play, so if one is not flowing, I'll turn to another. If I do feel 'stumped' in all directions, I try reading someone else's book to get motivated or just spend some time with the family until I can relax and write again. Usually, I'm simply using all of my brain power in my business (Gathering of Goods), and I need to concentrate on that before writing just then. And that's okay too!

1. Read good literature. You are what you eat.
2. Write often. Fill a page. Just start at the middle of an imagined story and try to fill a reader in, comfortably and effortlessly, on your entire plot on one page. I did this for years before actually making full book length manuscripts!

Currently I'm trying to get more books on Kindle. And trying to write about three different stories at once!

The best thing about being a writer is that you get to make the story go the way you want it to! You'll never reach the end and say, "Oh, no! You can't have THAT character die!"
In all seriousness, I love to tell stories, and that is the best part of being a writer - being able to tell people stories, true or imagined. Period.

I get inspired in many ways. It could be a song, a painting, a place, or just a daydream; but most often it is a true story from the past that either forms a fictional version or makes me want to tell the actual story in a compelling, interesting way.
