I love local history. I read history books written many years ago to see a different perspective and I research speciffics of that history. I've focused on ghost towns, the Old Spanish Trail and Utah's Blackhawk Indian War. I've even went to old battle sites to get a boots on the ground feel.

I take an Ipad and go for a ride in the mountains. I'll usually find something that will inspire me to get my fingers typing.
Get away from the TV and internet because it can pull your focus completely away from your writing and your inner creativity. I'm sure my next book would be done had I never been introduced to facebook!

Knowing people enjoyed my novel. I have people calling or emailing because they are ready for the next book. I've had people get so into my book, they are asking for GPS coordinates to specific locations.
I've also enjoyed talking to High School english and writing classes telling them if I can write a book, anyone can. I think we all have at least one book inside us. The challenge is to get it on paper and expressing it in a manner others will enjoy.

(view spoiler)[I'm currently working on two books, and that's been my problem taking longer than I expected. The first is the sequel to the first Kid Colter novel called Kid Colter, Dead Men Keep Good Secrets. All hell breaks loose after Colter is bushwhacked and finds himself knocking on death's door. Colter must overcome injuries to save his family and friends from a group of outlaws out for revenge. Even injured, these outlaws find what it's like to face Kid Colter's guns. (hide spoiler)]

I love westerns and had the idea of Kid Colter just pop into my head. They say cowboys used to write poetry while riding the range, I did that too. My best inspiration came as I studied old broken down cabins or unexplained structures found in places they shouldn't be. My characters show that there's good and bad in all cultures and that people can overcome their trials.
