I can't remember which climber it was, but they likened rock climbing to art and ice climbing to a craft. It set me thinking about the differences between the two. I believe writing combines aspects of both. The bursts of inspiration, the creation of the aesthetic, are the art. The discipline needed to overhaul, re-work and do the million tiny adjustments required to bring the work to a finished whole; that is the craft. I'll only write when I feel inspired - I wouldn't expect anybody to read my books otherwise. The more prosaic things like proofreading and copy editing I leave for the between-times.

Hey Harry,
The book I'm working on at present is a collection of short stories, all with the common thread that they explore themes relating to the conscious and subconscious mind, many of them from the perspectives of animals. A couple of the stories, The Mirrored Ocean and The Isle of the Antella , are already available as stand-alone titles on Amazon. I'm hoping to release the collection later this year, although the project is developing its own momentum - I keep getting new ideas so I don't know how long it will end up being. In the meantime, I'm planning to keep on releasing the longer ones as individual publications.

My earliest writing memories are of the story writing assignments we used to have in little school. I remember taking them quite seriously; I really wanted to write good stories. I still have my exercise books from that time, with the stories in. They're funny to look back upon - most were heavily influenced by small events that happened just before they were written, and all of them have lots of illustrations. I still, as then, think in pictures, but these days I go to greater lengths to draw them with words.

I travel. It's a cliché, but the real world (or, should I say, the universe) is stranger and more exotic than fiction. You just have to go out and find stories and ideas - the whole universe is full of them. The beauty of fiction is that, as a writer, you can then adapt, adorn and embellish those stories and ideas without limits until you have captured whatever it is that you were seeking.

When someone picks up your book to read it, they are making a personal investment of their precious time in the words that *you* have written, over and above everything that everyone else has ever written. That is an incredible honour. Never forget this.
