I met a bunch of band members during my years working at a hotel close to a concert hall. On the surface they all seemed very alike no matter what kind of band they were in but I also got chances to talk to some of them in depth (3rd shift, guests get bored or hungry and I had the keys to the kitchen, lol) and I found out just how unique all the different people I talked to were and how different their life was when they weren't on tour.
I was already thinking of different fiction stories I could write loosely based on some of them when I watched a documentary on a religious cult where many of the women never got to leave the controlled environment and had no idea how other people lived.
So I put the two story ideas together.
It was fun to write so I hope people enjoy it even though the main character has a lot of stuff to work through.

I get to solve problems and give my characters their chance for happily ever after. Sadly, I don't always get to do that for the people I care about in my real life.

First, I never have a shortage of ideas. I have a file cabinet full of story ideas.
My problem is finding enough hours in the day to sit down and write.
If I'm in the middle of a story and I'm not sure what should happen next because I have too many ideas, I'll put it away for a few days and read a book in a different genre than the one I'm trying to write.
This really seems to help me and often the decision my character makes or the next scene, when I start writing again is not one of the 2 or 3 I was thinking about when I took the break but something completely new.

Read a lot and carve out time to set down and write.
At first just concentrate on telling the story while you're excited about it. Once you know the beginning and end and work out the journey between the two, you can go back and fix grammar.

I'm working on a collection of humorous short stories about my time as a third shift waitress at a popular waffle establishment.
There are certain people you never see in daylight and situations that simply never occur except between the hours of midnight and 5 AM.

I watch the news and play the 'what if' game. What if she survived..., what if a girl scout rang the doorbell just as the..., what if the guy was set up...
Well you get the idea.
