Ro O'Connor Research... If I'm struggling, it's usually because my mind isn't ready to write what I am attempting to write. That's usually connected to me not feeling properly equipped from an informational perspective. Research usually takes care of that. If I'm still blocked, I'll skip to something else that I know needs to be written, and by the time I circle back to the 'block' topic the process goes much more smoothly.
Ro O'Connor Knowing that you took a blank sheet of paper (or computer screen) and created something that others can enjoy and be entertained by.
Ro O'Connor Don't do it if it's not a passion, because writing is hard. Write what YOU want. Tell YOUR stories. Work at your writing. First drafts are all about getting your ideas out. Worry about polishing and tweaking on subsequent drafts, and there should be multiples of those. I subscribe to the expression, "There are no good writers..., just good re-writers." I am definitely one of those.
Ro O'Connor I am writing a sequel to my second novel 'Death by Nightmare' and have been working on it for about a month. It has taken me that long to come up with a first draft of about 15 chapters, and I suspect I'm a little less than halfway through the first draft. I'm also through two drafts of a sequel to 'Bless Me Father For I Have Sinned' and working on a fifth draft of my first science fiction effort.
Ro O'Connor Caffeine!!! Seriously, nobody writes without a passion to pursue it, so inspiration hasn't been a problem for me. I do try to treat my writing as a job, and I try to write something virtually everyday..., as in probably 350 days in the past year. I have more ideas than I can possibly write about.
Ro O'Connor I wanted to hit a couple of different genres that I had an interest in writing within. 'Bless Me Father For I Have Sinned' was my first effort in the 'murder mystery' genre. The story is set in Dallas and I drew on a few personal experiences in creating the story's background.
