I think I got the idea for 'Not Speaking' when I was about twelve, but it wasn't really the idea for the book, more a conviction that there would be a book. After that it was cumulative, and I finally wrote it when I was past sixty.

I'd like to go to Folio in Piers Torday's 'The Lost Magician' and 'The Frozen Sea'. 'The Frozen Sea' is just out (second volume in what will be a trilogy) and it's brilliant. What would I do there? Defend the importance of books and imagination of course!

It's a bit late for a summer reading list, but I have been sorting my books and trying to make room on my shelves for new ones, and I came on a very brittle and dusty old orange Penguin edition of Henry Miller's 'The Colossus of Maroussi', which I remember loving when I was in my twenties, and have started reading it and am loving it all over again.
