Linda K. Wertheimer Faith Ed stems from two events, one personal. When I was 9, my family moved from western New York State to Ohio. My brothers and I turned out to be the only Jews in a small school where weekly Christianity were taught. Our school was definitely preaching, not teaching about a particular religion. That led to ostracism and isolation. It led me to question, "What if instead of promoting only Christianity, my school had tried to teach us about other religions? Would we have understood each other better and learned about our world?" Fast forward to 2010, and I heard about a suburban Boston school's field trip to a mosque. There was some controversy, but what intrigued me even more was that these sixth-graders were spending a semester learning about Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. Their parents overall supported the lessons, and so did the students, who said it led to more respect. The idea from the book came from both of these events.
