Weather permitting, I take a one-hour walk everyday or, when the weather is lousy, I ride my stationary bike for 20-30 minutes. Then, while at the computer, I try to get off my bottom and move around every hour or so.

For me, overcoming procrastination (I call it research) is a real problem. However, it is often through my research that I find inspiration. Sometimes, while reading a document from the late 17th Century, I'll find an event or a fact that I can turn into chapters.

If you are inspired to write, do so. Then, don't stop...don't give up.

I guess the biggest mystery is how I became who I am. Even I don't know how or why I ended up following the career path into health promotion and social marketing, and then segueing into historical fiction. I guess the plot would have to follow all the little decisions... right or wrong... that I made along the way.

I firmly believe that the only way to deal with writer's block is to write through it! That's all that works for me.

The best thing about being a writer is having the ability to tell stories to more people than I could otherwise.

I am currently working on The Savage Wilderness, Book 2 of The Boschloper Saga. This volume describes a trading expedition by the English of New York to French-ruled Machilimackinac in 1687. The English goal is to wrest the fur trade from the French. Our hero, Sean O'Cathail, and his companions take a journey that will last six months or more, cover approximately 1,000 miles, cross three of the largest lakes in the world, and expose them to hazards, both natural and man-made, that they could not yet imagine and against which they could only hope to prevail.

I spent 36 years (my entire professional life) living in New York's Capital District. It is impossible to ignore history while living in that area. I became fascinated with the happenings of 17th-century New York and the interplay between the Dutch, English and the Iroquois and with their competitors for the fur trade, the French of Canada and their Indian allies. This led to my first novel, Primitive Passions, which is the first of four books in my saga of the period, The Boschloper Saga. Book 2, The Savage Wilderness, will be published in March 2016.
