I picked up Tacitus' 'Histories' in a bookshop and read on the back that there was chaos, assassination, civil war and four emperors one after the other in the year AD69. I bought it, read it, and really wanted to tell this astounding story in novel form.

What I usually do is go on a three day bender, followed by a day of Captain Scott's tea, mulligatawny soup, Powell and Pressburger films, and, if I'm weakening, Old Holborn. Day five I come up fresh as a daisy and fertile as the Nile Delta.
