I have this bad habit of starting series and not finishing them. I plan on doing some series binging this summer. Terry Brooks' Shannara Series. Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Orson Scott Card's Ender Series. And some others as well. I think I'll be busy for the rest of the year!

I just finished published my first book, The Orthogonal Galaxy, a near-future sci-fi that took me years to get fully written down. After a couple of re-writes, and substantial edits, I finally got something that I liked... but, of course, I'm curious to know if anyone else likes it. I want to continue to improve as a writer, since I am brand new to the craft, and am looking forward to feedback of all kind on the first book.
In the meantime, I have also started outlining Book 2 of the Galaxy Series. In fact, I already have 180 pages on paper. That's because I got too ambitious with Book 1, and had to find a better stop to conclude, leaving a good amount of material ready for the sequel.

This can be a tough one. There are so many priorities in life to get in the way of writing. Work, family, church, friends... As a writing hobbyist, it all boils down to making time to write. It's easier when I spend some of my down time (e.g. work commute, etc.) to think about the story. That is when I start to get motivated to make the time to write.

Write for the love of writing. I have no intention of making a living out of writing. Even if you're looking to make a living out of writing, don't let the publishing and marketing flow get in the way of the creative process of writing.

For me, the best thing about being a writer is the hordes of fans who constantly praise my books. Oh, wait... I forgot... I don't have hordes of fans.
Kidding aside, the best thing about writing is the joy of discovering the story as I write. Learning about the characters and the suspense that they go through is the same reason I love reading. However, for some reason, the discovery is even more powerful when it's my own story.

This may seem too simple to even commit to words, but I deal with writer's block by simply putting the book down and coming back to it later. Usually, something that will happen during the course of my day and my interactions with those around me that will trigger some solution to the blockage.

One night, I had a very simple dream. A college professor at Cal Tech had returned from a visit to Chile over the Summer months where he had been studying the stars for a parallel Earth there, where the nights in the Andes are the longest and darkest of the year. The secretary of the astronomy department asked him how the trip went, and apologized to him for some of the travel problems he had experienced.
Then, I woke up. Nothing more. Nothing less. A simple dream, two characters, with few details. All morning I asked, myself, "Why would I have a dream like that?" From that moment, a plot continued to develop in my head, and after two weeks of obsession over this simple dream and the story that came out of it, I decided to write it down.
