Hi Arlene. What a pleasure to hear from you! Yes, I've finished the sequel. My husband is converting it to a pdf file, and I'll have a couple of people look it over before I submit it for publication. I feel like I owe it to readers (and to my characters) to bring them more closure.

I guess the best thing is being in a really terrific online writer's group. My fellow writers are friendly and supportive, and of course, I love reading their imaginative stories. It's a pleasure being in the midst of creative people. I think that participating in Goodreads as a reader or writer is another way of belonging to a creative, engaged group.

I don't remember a particular idea that got me started. I think the book evolved out of a need I felt to make sense of my experiences in Latin America. I started with Meg, an American who was an outsider like me. Patricia began as a secondary character, then moved into a prominent position. Noemi came last. I realized I couldn't tell the story adequately without her viewpoint.

Sometimes I'm lucky, and ideas just bubble up. That happens most often in the early morning. But more often, I ease into the process. I journal most mornings, and I blather on for a while, then I turn to the novel, writing in an easy, zero-expectations kind of way.

I'm currently working on the third draft of a sequel to Reading the Knots. It takes place in 1978, and a lot of the characters are back.
