Most haunting of the candidates, perhaps, is the mad Johannes, whom Francois Truffaut described stimulatingly in 1969: 'The film's hero, Johannes, is a visionary who thinks he is Jesus Christ; but only when he comes to recognise his delusion does he 'receive' spiritual power.'
