“The goal of moral hypocrisy isn’t reached without skill. To gain the full benefits, we must be adept not only at retrospective rationalization and deceit of others but also at self-deception.”

“Given that this book is about morality, I should be honest and admit up front that I’m not sure my analysis is right. Indeed, I think it’s almost certainly wrong, at least in spots. Unfortunately, I don’t yet know where those spots are. Both skepticism about the argument and calls for clearer evidence are warranted. My attention to the vast relevant literature is selective. The issues are complex and controversial. The conclusions rather cynical. Evidence to date, although supportive, isn’t nearly as extensive and systematic as I would like. I present the analysis as a work in progress, counting on others and on future research to make it better.”
