“If the man standing opposite me had a miniature tit where his nose should be, I don’t think I could look any more surprised.”

“If my memories of the weekend were only a figment of my imagination why does the pain feel so real? Why am I grieving the loss of what was never mine to begin with? I close my eyes and search every corner of my mind for a way out.”

“What if I made worse decisions in my twenties or thirties? I could be in prison, I could be homeless, I could be married to Katie Hopkins.”

“one day that child will fill your heart with joy, and the next day they’ll rip it out and stamp all over it. That’s the reality of parenthood”

“During which month do people typically sleep the least?” “Um, I’m not sure. I suppose the summer months, when it’s hot at night, or maybe in December when there’s lots of parties and late nights.” He continues to stare up at me until, barely perceptible, the edge of his mouth curls upwards a mere fraction. “February,” he declares. “What?” “That hearing issue again. I said February.” “Why February?” “Because it has the least amount of nights so therefore people sleep less. The answer is obvious if you thoroughly analyse the question.”

“Everyone is keen to show photos of their latest holiday or new car but not so many are keen to share photos of their bathroom scales post-holiday, or the final demand from the car finance company. For all I know, Connor sold a kidney to buy the house, or at very least tied himself into a crippling mortgage. My brain isn’t wired that way though, and I feel inadequate. It’s that inadequacy which contributed to the depression episode.”

“Even if you followed your bloodline back a mere thousand years, your ancestors survived war, famine, plagues, disease, and hardships you cannot imagine. Even three hundred years ago, the average life expectancy was only forty-three years and for every ten children born, six never survived to adulthood.” “That’s bloody grim.” “And yet, against almost insurmountable odds, you are here today because generation after generation of your forebears survived.”

“The microwave is set to work again and my favourite pudding is served. From experience, I know it’ll be stone cold in places, and hotter than the surface of the sun in others.”

“That’s the thing about memories I guess — it’s lovely to hold them in your head, but the real joy is in sharing them.”

“Like most couples, Megan and I went through the three traditional phases of sexual congress. There were those awkward first months where you’re conscious of being naked in front of a virtual stranger or acting like a deviant. You tend to be fairly conservative but the sex is exciting because it’s with somebody new. During the second phase, you overcome any shyness and start to be a little more adventurous. You learn from your mistakes and while the frequency of sex might decline from phase one, the quality and variety is usually better. The third phase is the golden years. This is the period when you perfect the skills learnt in phase two. Boundaries are pushed, inhibitions are lost and you become finely attuned to the needs of your partner. The frequency is down to just once or twice a month but when it happens, it’s usually exceptional. Unfortunately, I have discovered there is a fourth phase — angry, resentful wanking in the bathroom.”

“What is it with you and death, Clement?” “Huh?” “That poor woman at the stables in Surrey — she also died with a knife sticking out of her chest, didn’t she?” “She was a fucking nutjob and died because of it. I didn’t kill her.” “Just a coincidence then?” “They happen.” “They do when you’re around apparently.” “What you sayin’?” The bliss I awoke to this morning now feels tainted. And the man who created that bliss isn’t perhaps the man I thought he was. “You didn’t have to kill Alex,” I murmur, repeating myself.”

“The same could be said about the decisions we make in life. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t. You can dwell on those decisions or you can move on. After my inexplicable journey, I now know that nothing good ever comes from avoiding a tough decision or dwelling on the outcome. No”

“The information on the page is scant, with most of the content restricted to the user’s friends. The only information visible confirms this Cameron Gail is studying chemistry at Oxford University. Perplexed, I stare at the screen. On closer inspection I'm sure it's the same young man, but how does anyone go from being a student at one of the world's greatest universities to the life of a drug addict,”

“I want you to be happy, Dad. I want us to be happy, you know, like a normal family. I’m sick of living in fear you’re about to lose your rag over something and nothing. I’m sick of you never giving a damn about anything I do. I’m sick of your constant complaining about stuff that doesn’t matter. I want a Dad, not a distant stranger who just pays the bills and stomps around like he hates the world.” He”

“Why bother with the hassle of visiting the town centre when you can have all manner of goods delivered to your door in as little as two hours? Some people just can’t accept change and want to cling on to the supposed good old days. Fools.”

“Dad. I was so busy focusing on all the negativity that I didn’t see what I had, or what I could have had. I spent most of my life analysing where I’d gone wrong rather than where I was. You don’t realise how much you have until it’s all taken away from you.”

“It pains me to admit it, but my generation tends to show we care by setting up activist groups on Facebook, creating online petitions, or sponsoring celebrities to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. We’ve become a generation of virtue signallers whereas here, people show they care with deeds and actions. Jan is the best example of that.”
