“THE SUN WAS SETTING OVER THE CENTRAL plains of Avantia. Tagus the Night Horse, good Beast and protector of the land, nodded contentedly. All was peaceful, as it had been ever since Tom had freed him from the evil curse of Malvel the Dark Wizard. It was time to rest.”

“Daltec’s face was green as he clung to Epos’s feathers. “I don’t understand why we couldn’t use magic to travel to Rion,” he said. “After last time, we had to be sure where we’d end up,” said Tom, allowing himself a tiny flicker of a smile. It vanished quickly when he thought about the task ahead. An ancient Beast was marching on this kingdom, guided by hands of Evil. None of the young Beasts would be able to stand up to such deadly enemies. I have to help them.”

“Flowering Fields of Kelp ahead. They passed over the bright kelp and the cannon-blasted seagrass, then dived towards the village. From above, the damage caused by Repta was all too clear. Several of the dome-shaped buildings were little more than piles of rubble, and chunks of masonry littered the fields. Max spotted the green-gowned form of Elra in the clearing at the heart of the village. She was pointing, and calling orders to the villagers, who were collecting scattered stones and piling them into carts. Max and Lia made straight for the Astarian leader. She looked up, her eyes narrowing to angry slits as she spotted them, and her hand went to the hilt of her coral sword. “Why do you return after all you’ve done?” she cried. “The Breather brought a tech monster to our village. He is not welcome here!” “No!” Lia said urgently. “That robot attacked Max. It wasn’t his fault. And now the people who sent the Robobeast are coming this way. They mean to destroy us all. You”

“rubble of his own castle.” Tom felt a wave of relief surge through him as he embraced Aduro, but this was quickly replaced with panic. Where was Arcta? Had the giant somehow been pulled back into Gorgonia? “Arcta has returned to his rightful place – in the mountains,” said King Hugo, sensing his worry. He rose from his throne. “Well done, Tom. You are truly Avantia’s greatest champion.” Tom bowed his head. While the King thanked Elenna for all her help, Tom looked out of one of the throne-room windows. The sky was sapphire-blue, and the sun shone gently down on the green land that surrounded the castle. Brightly coloured flags and pennants fluttered on the houses in the distance. They had escaped the swirling red fog of evil Gorgonia for ever. “We are holding a feast in your honour in the Great Hall today,” King Hugo announced, as he stroked Storm and Silver in turn. “Avantia is impatient to welcome home her heroes.” A liveried servant walked in and draped a soft woollen blanket over Storm’s back, before leading the stallion away for food and a warm stable full of fresh bedding. Tom looked down at the purple jewel that still lay in his hand. He slipped it into his belt. The row of six jewels glowed fiercely, filling the throne room with a rainbow of light and power. The others looked on in wonder. Then King Hugo clapped an arm around Tom’s shoulder, and Aduro walked between Elenna and Silver. Together,”

“We’re cursed,” an old man wailed. “I don’t believe in curses,” said Tom’s uncle firmly. “But our village needs help. One of us must go to the king and request his aid.” Tom stepped forward. “I’ll go to the palace.” The villagers laughed. “Send a boy on such a mission? Ha!” “The king would laugh at us for sending a child.” Tom’s uncle spoke quietly. “No, Tom. You’re too young. I’m head of the village. I’ll go.” Suddenly a small boy, smeared in soot, pushed through the crowd. “Help!” he gasped. “Please help! Our barn is on fire!” “Men! Bring your pails to the river now!” Tom’s uncle roared to the crowd. “The rest of you bring spades to the barn – if we can’t quench the fire we’ll bury it. Quickly!” Tom looked at his uncle as the men rushed to obey. “The village needs you here as its leader, Uncle Henry,” he said. “Please let me go instead.” Tom’s uncle turned to face him, his face serious. “I suppose I have to let you out into the world sooner or later,” he said. He stared into the distance. “Perhaps it’s meant to be…” He shook himself and turned back to Tom. “Yes, you must go to the king. And there is no time to waste – you will have to leave first thing tomorrow!”

“on a mattress at the far side of the room. He kept tossing and turning and letting out low moans of pain. His face was flushed with fever. Elenna crossed the room and stooped down beside him to lay a hand on his forehead. On the ground in the middle of the group was a shallow bowl of water. A man got up, dipped a scrap of linen into the bowl, then put the scrap to his lips to suck the water out of it. Tom exchanged a glance with Elenna as she returned to his side. These people must be desperate if this was the only way they could make their water last.”
