“took a step away from the table, and then I reached out with my magic and depressed the button at the base of the mechanical arm. An instant later, a double-edged blade shot out from under the gauntlet with a slight metallic screech. It was about a foot and a half long and as wide as my wrist, and it glinted silver in the light of the workshop.”

“I found the Master’s runes in the cavern,” I muttered in a low voice as I bent my head toward hers. “The cave-in was a deliberate act of sabotage.” Aurora went stock still and turned her wide emerald eyes to me. “You think one of the mages works for the Master?” the half-elf asked with a worried frown. “For all I know, one of the mages could actually be the Master himself,” I grumbled, but then my face broke out in a grin. “But look at the other side, this is actually good news.” “Mason Flynt, how could any of this be good news?” asked the Ignis Mage as she cocked an incredulous eyebrow at me. “The Master doesn’t like our train project,” I said with a quiet chuckle, “and that means we’re doing something right.” Aurora shook her head but allowed herself a small smile. “Oh Gods, only you could find the bright side in finding out we have a dangerous traitor in our midst.”

“You bitch!” the sister screamed as blood poured out of her side. “Fuck you.” Paige walked toward the blonde girl and fired off another shotgun shell into her head.”

“Shoshanne nodded and hurried toward the infirmary as Cayla stooped to bury her fingers in the dense black fur some more, and she grinned to herself in a way that made her look kind of similar to the cat. “You can feel how powerful it is,” she said under her breath. “What does the Master want with these? They must be special in some way.” “Well, he’s already got sphynxes and all manner of creatures at that fortress,” I said with a shrug. “Looks like he’s diversifying. What I don’t understand is how the snatcher got them. I’ve never seen anything like this in Illaria, and the automaton is patrolling just east of Serin. At least, I think he is.” “There’s three, though,” Cayla pointed out as she trailed her hand along a pronged horn. “A pack.” I furrowed my brow. “You think the Master sent them out for an attack?” “I would,” Cayla admitted, and she peeled back the beast’s lip to reveal stark white, eight-inch canines. “If I had these at my disposal, I’d send them out in droves to slaughter my enemies. They’re fantastic, how could you not want to utilize this kind of beast as a means to a gruesome end?” “This is why we can’t have pets,” I sighed as Shoshanne emerged from the infirmary. “We have Ruela,” Cayla chuckled. “She’s not a pet, she’s a weapon,” I countered, “and a damn good one.”

“The elf stared back without speaking, and as he looked between Cayla and me, his gaze fell on her ass every time like a bad tick. I sighed, and Dragir must have looked over, because he suddenly said something in Elvish to the man that made his eyes go wide with fear, and he remained staring diligently at the pile of rockets he was responsible for instead. “He doesn’t speak English,” Dragir explained. I furrowed my brow. “What did you tell him?” “I told him you would skin him alive and feed his innards to his own family if he kept it up,” Dragir replied. “This is accurate, yes?” I grinned. “It’s a little elven, but yeah, basically.”

“Sorry,” I finally managed. “Please, give Lord Allen my thanks for the flail, and tell him we’ll be in touch. Or that I honor the union? Whatever a baron would say.” “Perhaps that you acknowledge and are honored by the gesture,” the knight suggested. “Perfect!” I replied, and the five knights all bowed before they turned in tight precision to head back down the lane toward the stables.”

“I still stayed there staring as three possessed ogres beat their way straight through the stone walls. “Haragh,” I muttered, “these guys are possessed as hell.” “Yeah, I’d say so,” the half-ogre agreed as an entire wall keeled over and crashed into the street.”

“I get it,” Paige said. “We can practice stabbing each other.” “Yeah,” I said, “The knife is one of the world’s oldest tools and weapons. It’s perfect for self-defense because it is easy to conceal and use, but difficult to defend against. First, I’m going to go over the basics. Then, you all are going to practice stabbing me.” “Ohhh, stabbing you…” Tara chuckled. “Can you stab me later? Pretty please?” “Oh. My. God. Calm the fuck down, horn dog,” Anna hissed.”

“How much beer do you think is in here?” Tara asked, and she raised a brow at me. “Probably a lot,” I chuckled. “But let’s focus on the essentials first.” “You mean beer isn’t essential?” Paige grinned. “I would think not,” I smiled at the brunette. “Cold beer is a different story though.” “Cold beer is essential?” Anna asked with a wry smile. “Absolutely,” I grinned.”

“Can I ask why we went with red?” I muttered. “I’m more of a black and white kind of guy to tell you the truth.” “Yes, but you always get blood all over your shirts,” the princess replied as she popped the top button on my shirt open. “I thought we might as well lean into it. This way, if you have to kill someone, you still look nice.”

“Aah, now this is where I want to live.” Ivy glanced around the snowy landscape with the tiniest smile on her face. But for Ivy, that tiny smile practically lit up her entire face. “The middle of nowhere with no cell service or outsiders?” I smirked. “Yes.” She nodded. “And plenty of places to bury bodies. And with the snow that’s covering the burial site, it’ll keep the bodies fresh, and decomposition shouldn’t set in as quickly as it usually does. It’s quite beautiful, if you think about it.”

“two-toned eyes. “Why should I exert my efforts to repair something that is not mine?” the Baroness asked. “Why are you lingering around here if you don’t give a shit about the place?” I tossed back, and her coy smile faded slightly.”

“I looked back out the door just in time to see one of the men’s heads explode from Rolly’s SAW. “What the fuck!” another one yelled, and then he turned to run back toward us, but was quickly taken out by a headshot that I assumed was from Bailey. The last guy looked at his dead buddies and simply dropped to the ground and cowered. Then his body went limp, and his brains spread out behind him as Bailey landed another headshot. “Oh shit,” Anna laughed. “Guess I forgot about our backup.” “Tav didn’t,” Paige said as she smirked at me. “You could’ve just told us that was your plan,” Tara said with an eye roll as the door shut. “Where’s the drama in that?” I asked with a grin.”

“Ugh,” Tara groaned as she pulled the door open and looked at the bodies on the floor. “They smell.” “Well yeah,” Paige said. “They’ve evacuated their bowels at this point.” “You don’t mean…” Bailey trailed off. “They shit themselves?” Tara scoffed. “Yeah,” Paige shrugged. “It happens after you die sometimes.” “Normally we take care of the bodies too quickly to worry about it,” Anna added. “Ew,” Tara said. “I second that ew,” Bailey agreed.”

“Now, I had four fully built Boms with death machetes, AR-15s, and twenty magazines strapped to their chests, and I stepped back to judge the final products. Then I spent about five minutes wondering if I’d lost my damn mind, but as soon as I remembered the teleporting minions we were up against, I decided I hadn’t. I was just way more prepared to kick the Master’s ass than I had been since I got to this realm. So, I checked to make sure I was still the only person around before I indulged in a low and maniacal chuckle, and once I got the evil genius moment out of my system, I summoned my metal powers.”

“Oh, come on, Danny, look at them,” Jenny said as she nodded towards the two older people on the porch. “They look pretty in love to me.” “They seem to like each other quite a bit, but that doesn’t mean they’re in love,” Dan said. Jenny looked at her brother and then rolled her eyes. “Older people tend to connect faster,” I said with a shrug. “It’s rude to stare,” Betty called to us from the porch. “Maybe you two should get a room,” Paige teased. “I have one, but I didn’t think you were sticking around long enough to use it,” Betty chuckled. “Aw man, I didn’t need to hear that,” Dan groaned. “Don’t be weird, Dan,” Jenny said.”

“I very much wish to learn,” I responded eagerly. “Will you take me to them? The Order, I mean.” Aurora glanced at me out of the corner of her eye with a wry smile. “Why do you think I’m having you accompany me to my horse?” “Because you like me and are charmed by my smile?” I flashed my teeth to prove my point.”

“I could appoint Kurna to instruct the Ignis Mages, too,” I said half to myself. “He’d bring them all up to speed just as quickly.” The sight of the brawny mage igniting his entire head last night came to mind, and I hadn’t forgotten he’d managed to teach Aurora the same stunt within only a few drunken minutes.”

“I did always like diet Coke,” I chimed in as I ate some wolf jerky. “See?” Tara said, and she gave Anna an ‘I-told-you-so’ look. “Tav also likes to eat wolves, and he lived in the forest for a year,” Anna said with a wry smile before she turned to me with a grin. “No offense, Tav.”

“My women screeched while Deya reared up and roared with fury, and I crashed to the ground before I whipped around and saw both ogres yanking the dog back and forth to try to get a bite in. Before any of us could save Ruela, though, another pained yowl rent the air, and my blood turned to ice. Then one of the ogres staggered back while he clutched his oozing wrist, and I’d only just furrowed my brow in confusion when Ruela tore the second ogre’s jugular out. My jaw dropped as I watched the wolfish beast rip his face off next, and as soon as the ogre hit the ground, she lunged to clamp her jaws in the other ogre’s bulging gut. Blood splattered across the ground while she ripped into the giant green beast with a vengeance, and the nearby ogres could only stand by and stare while Ruela mauled both of her attackers until their insides were on the outside, and their faces were shredded pits with mushed brains in the middle. When it was all done, I finally remembered to blink again, and Ruela snorted some green flesh from her nose before she shook herself off, stepped in the ogre’s guts, and retrieved her severed deer head. Then the wolfish beast trotted toward the mansion with her tail held high, and every ogre turned toward me in silent, furious shock. “Okay,” I muttered as I got up on wobbly legs, and I nodded like everything was still under control. “So… now you know not to eat my dog, but let’s lay out a few more ground rules before I head out.”

“I’ll show you later on,” I assured him as I turned to Dorinick. “This does mean we’ll need those catapults, though. Have you made any headway with shipping them down from Orebane?” “Ah.” Dorinick grimaced. “I have not.” Urn snorted. “Why is that?” “They’re fuckin’ huge, that’s why,” the dwarven general shot back.”

“Oh, you know, it’s the usual elven bullshit,” I told her. “I had my meeting with Aeris last night while you ladies were at the feast, and he didn’t seem very surprised to hear the head of House Syru had runes engraved on him. Now that I think about it, he seemed to care the least about that part, in fact.” “So … ” Cayla led, “how does that put you in the doghouse?” “Welp,” I belched. “Now, I get to hand over a hundred and fifty rifles, and if I’m a good boy he’ll talk to me about rune magic when I’m done.” I sent a pointed look in their general direction, but I was too drunk to tell if I’d gotten it right. “So obviously … I’m drinking and fucking around instead.”

“How’d it go?” I asked as I quickly closed the gap between us, and I knelt in front of her to rub her arms since they were covered in goosebumps. “Is everything alright?” “Yeah.” I nodded. “Okay … did you see anything suspicious?” “No.” Now, I cocked a brow and straightened up a bit. “Are you still Deya?” “Uh-huh,” the elf replied, and she forced a smile. “Just … it was fine. All fine. Nothing important. I’m fine.” “Are you sure? Because you seem kind of--” “I saw my brother having sex, and I can’t unsee it,” Deya blurted out, and my brows shot up. “Oh! That’s … shit,” I managed. “Yeahhh,” she sang, and her voice went up several uncomfortable octaves. “I think it was with Rhys’ wife, too, so … there’s that.” “With Aliasa?” I chuckled. “Damn! Dragir, you dog.” Deya furrowed her brows, though, and I immediately sobered as best as I could. “I mean damn, what a dog. That’s … rude.” “Let’s just move on,” Deya suggested. I nodded. “Definitely.”
