“Thinking continues when we are sleeping, so it is common to think you are awake when you are asleep, and there is a considerable body of evidence to back this up. When I spent 12 hours in bed trying to force sleep, I thought I was only sleeping 3 or maybe 4 hours a night, but I was sleeping longer. The body needs a core amount of sleep, and it will find ways to get it. My sleep quality was very poor, and I was experiencing long periods of wakefulness as I lay there in my anxious state trying to force sleep. However, all the evidence pointed to the fact that I was sleeping longer than I thought and that I wasn’t sleep deprived.”
