“comrades at border sites belonging to Field Station Rothwesten were even busier monitoring Soviet and East German military activity in southern East Germany. They had gleaned information from their intercept that the Soviet 8th Guards Army (1) was about to conduct major joint maneuvers with East German ground forces near the Fulda Gap northeast of Frankfurt am Main. ASA Europe decided that the highly specialized RRCV-4 intercept van at Hohenbogen could be used more productively at Rothwesten’s Mount Meissner border site near the East German border. Doug Broussard and Don McGrew received orders at midday Friday to move the van up to Meissner and have it operational by 0800 hours on Monday 24 July. Everyone on duty at our site who was not deemed operationally essential when the orders were received was pressed into service to free up the RRCV-4 from its rocky perch next to the 292 vans”
