“I wanted to thank you,” Grith explained. “You are the first human I have ever truly seen as a dragon-like creature. One that is like us, rather than like prey. It is difficult for me to dislike one that I see only as a food source, and my personal distaste for you has made me realize that you have progressed beyond that.” She pulled her lips back, long white fangs glinting in the moonlight. “I do not kill other dragons, but if for some reason, I was forced to kill you, nothing would remain of your body but ash. Not a single drop of blood or piece of flesh would be left.”

“Humans are like dragons, Grith decided. Both had the capacity to do good, and the capacity to do evil. Today, a lot had done evil, but she’d seen good, too. And just as she thought it was wrong to kill an evil dragon, she decided it was wrong to kill an evil human, whether witch, wizard, or mundane.”

“Try not to use too much of your magic yet,” Paul replied, not particularly concerned as he waved his hand, wafting smoke away. “If you do, I’ll have to force-feed you, which I doubt will be fun for either of us.” He scratched the top of his head. “Do you prefer human meat? You did almost bite off one of your coworker’s hands. I’ve gotten special council permission to do whatever is necessary to take care of you, and I would like you to be as comfortable as possible.”
“Do not feed me humans,” Grith growled. “How can you feel that way towards your own species?”

“Did it work?” Ashley asked. “She still looks like a dragon to me.”
“It only affects mundanes,” Chris explained. “You and I can see her as normal. I think it’s working, since I’m still using magic, but I’m not sure.”
“I could go outside to check,” Grith suggested, craning her head over toward the door.
“No!” Chris and Ashley shouted in unison, looking at each other as they did so.”
