“More than this, however, it is the growth and development of capitalism to first include women and people of colour as model employees and consumers, and then 'homocapitalism' that frames and addresses LGBTQ+ people in the same neoliberal terms. As this chapter has argued, the inclusion of LGBTQ+ identities and rights as part of a celebratory 'diversity talk' has gone further than the 'diversity talk' that ostensibly celebrated gender and race. This is because Pride has been an easily accessible platform for corporate and other institutions to parade in colourful, celebratory and happy ways, in terms that are not easily possible for the anti-racist movement, which tends to be characterised by anger and protest about ongoing injustice and inequality.”

“Rivera and Johnson faced racism and transphobia from the early Pride attendees, but they also identified the precarity and injustice of capitalism as the source of LGBTQ+ oppression and argued that Pride was complicit in this injustice.”
