“Always aspire to mediocrity first. If you can do that, you’ll find you’re always moving up in life.”
Magen Toole
“She wasn’t afraid. Fear was just a shadow, and she could outrun shadows now.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“I can’t tell if I hate you or if I’m actually proud.” “It’s probably hate.” Bridger shrugged. “You’re confusing pride with tequila.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“It’s time to go home now, Daddy,” Rebecca whispered. “Okay?” Closing his eyes, he nodded. “Okay.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“Oh my god,” Clara chirped excitedly. “Am I the Flash? Can I please be the Flash?”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“No, of course I don’t have paperwork for that gun. I bought it at a gun show. Because I’m a wealthy white man in America and I’ve been informed that I have more rights as a gun owner than anybody else on the street. By god, I’m going to exploit that while I still can.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“As the bus pulled away, he seized and hit the ground in a heap. Adam was out the doors before the driver could stop to let him off, prying them open and hopping down to rush to Bridger’s side. The others followed after him. “Hey,” Adam said. “Hey, hey, hey.” Adam scooped Bridger up and turned him over to pull him into his lap. He wiped the blood away from Bridger’s nose and checked his eyes as they rolled around in his skull. A bruise blossomed on his forehead where he hit his skull on the pavement. His muscles shook in violent waves, locking his arms and twisting his legs. Behind his eyelids, his brain was on fire as images popped and fizzed in the dark like burst bulbs or poorly packed fireworks.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“What, are you timing me?” “Are you supposed to be my babysitter?” He shrugged. “Yeah, I guess.” She wrinkled her nose. “You smell like cigarettes.” “Okay, well, that’s because I’ve been smoking cigarettes. I’ve had a long morning. You’re the one who slept in, so I don’t think you have any room to judge me right now.” “I think I like Clara better.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“Oh, c’mon. I can be Kinetica! Norah can be Miss Universe!” “You’ve really thought about this, haven’t you?” asked Adam. “I may have written down a list the other day. Oh, and you can be the Strong Man! Or Captain Might, or maybe Lion Heart.” “What about me?” Bridger asked. “Short Sight?” Adam smirked. “The Big C?” offered Clara. “The Incredible Dying Man?” “Oh, go fuck yourselves.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“They didn’t know then that it would end this way: with cancer, a crash, and a widening sea between Camden and East Essex. Even so, as Bridger left his wife’s office to find a boy named Adam Harlow, they knew it was for the best.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“Adam sighed again and leaned into the touch. He felt like he could swell up and float away and Bridger would be there to keep him.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“Oh, honey.” “What?” “You mean Bridger, don’t you?” His shoulders drooped as he leaned away. “It’s not what you think.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“No one else spoke. Their eyes turned to their plates. Sarah put her face in her hands. After a moment, Adam shook his head. “Of course none of you say anything.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“Adam was like that. His clear eyes and his honest smile were painful to look at sometimes. He had broad hands with palms roughened from fixing engines and trucks in the desert. They were strong like he was strong, despite the softness they cradled Bridger with whenever he fell. It was the kind of unselfish generosity that set Bridger’s teeth on edge. He was useless in the face of such good.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“People like us?” “Yes.” Luther smiled again. “People like us.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“By the end of the night, Hannah was talking about Vulcans and Klingons and warp speed travel. Clara couldn’t help but feel just a bit proud of herself. By the end of the week, they were finished with Kirk and Spock and on to Picard and Riker. Within a few weeks, they would be on to Sisko and Janeway, too, and Hannah would scribble the Bird-of-Prey in her notebook and think of the stars.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“Because I know that I don’t know how we became what we are, or if this was fate, because I don’t believe in fate even if it were. I don’t even believe in ghosts or angels, but you’re both, aren’t you? And... and as bad as it sounds, I’m glad that all of this happened to me. I’m happy, and I don’t think I’ve ever really been happy before. And I’d really like to think you had something to do with that, if that’s okay.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“After a moment, Adam started to smile. “You just say that because you’re psychic.” “No, I say that because I’m always right. That’s why you married me.” “You said you saw it in a dream.” “And you didn’t say no when I asked, did you?” “Did I have a choice?” “No.” His other self leaned in and kissed Adam. He kissed Adam softly at first, and then firmly until Adam opened his mouth in a sigh. “That’s because I’m psychic.”
Magen Cubed, The Crashers
“He had the good sense to grab his parasol before he left; otherwise, he would have been cooking in the afternoon sun, nothing but a puddle in Def Leppard crop-top and skinny jeans.”
