“It's nothing," I shook my head. "How much night do we have left?"

"Six hours," Karzac said.

"Good enough," I said, and misted away.

"She said that the first night she was here and then went out to kill sixteen priests," Karzac sighed when Lissa disappeared.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Domination
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind,”
Connie Suttle, Blood Passage
“Many things can be manipulated, including the truth. Some enjoy making lies of the truth, no matter how persuasive the facts are.”
Connie Suttle, Keeper
“And you were instrumental in capturing Richter?" "Yeah. He was a squirrel." I heard Charles snicker in the background. "Lissa, this is no time for humor." "But he was. A squirrel, I mean. Richter was a vampire shapeshifter.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Royal
“While I ate a peanut butter sandwich later, I switched on the news. A microphone was shoved in Hank's face and I blinked at him in shock. He was angry—extremely so—and not just with the reporter—I could tell by his words.

"Yes, my assistant manager didn't show up for work last night. I called the police because John is always on time and never misses a shift. I am only discovering now, through you, that his body was found near the wharf an hour ago."

"The police didn't call you?" The reporter—a young woman—feigned surprise.

"No. I assume they notified John's family first. How did you learn of the murder?"

"Through ah, well, the usual channels," she stuttered. I figured she'd gotten information through a source or listened in on police communications.

"You probably shouldn't mess with Hank right now," I spoke to the television screen. Too bad the reporter couldn't hear me.

"Are you involved in your assistant manager's disappearance?" Her question proved (to me, at least) that she had very little common sense.

"My whereabouts have already been disclosed to the police, who are in charge of this investigation, no matter how much you'd prefer to believe otherwise," Hank growled. "Where were you when my assistant manager disappeared?"

"What?" she squeaked.

"I can account for my time last night. Can you?" I almost laughed as she turned a bright pink. Yes, I dropped my shield and read her. She'd been in bed with her (married) producer. The station quickly cut to commercial while I snickered.”

“Nothing is forever, except the soul and love.”

“I understand that," he nodded. "I wanted to see you—tell you that I'm available if you need anything, or to run interference if somebody upsets you." He smiled at that—he was offering to act as a father figure if I needed it, to intercede on my behalf with what looked to be a gathering herd of potential mates.

"That may be the nicest thing anybody has offered to do for me, ever." I smiled at him, but my lower lip trembled slightly. Nobody had ever asked to be my parent before. I had someone stepping up now.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Revolution
“You can't call back a lie, once it has been told," Ildevar nodded. "Some will choose to believe the lie, no matter how much evidence to the contrary is presented.”
Connie Suttle, Keeper
“like every major shift in history, there will be those who find it difficult to deal with the changes," Winkler observed. "It's like a rising tide. The water comes in and then recedes. Floods in again and recedes. But each time, it rises a little higher. We have to keep our eyes on the place that marks our highest goal and refuse to let the receding waves drag us away from it.”
Connie Suttle, Bumble
“You think they've gone to London to track Lissa down?" Weldon was worried over the same thing, but didn't want to reveal his concern to Lucas.

"Yes. Their mother is terrified and you know what the Council might do if they find out."

"They are not the most forgiving race on the earth," Weldon agreed, staring into his own coffee cup for a few moments.

"I don't think we can afford to anger them any more than we already have," Lucas went on. "I have no idea what Tony was thinking when he did what he did."

Weldon didn't know either, and had Tony Hancock not been as highly placed as he was, Weldon might have sought justice for Tony's acts himself. Lissa was Pack and she'd been violated. He'd toyed with the idea of pulling his wolves out of the special division of the FBI. Daryl, Weldon's son, had pointed out that the information garnered through those wolves had been invaluable from time to time. For the moment, Weldon judiciously left those wolves where they were.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Domination
“I want her, bro. Not only for me, but because I think she has the best chance against these terrorists we're hunting." Tony placed a hand on his brother's shoulder. "She's a vampire, Deryn. And not just any vampire. Weldon Harper calls her Pack and she's a member of the Sacramento Pack, too. Now do you know who I'm talking about?"

Deryn's eyes widened as he stared at his brother. Now he knew why they were out in the middle of the English countryside in the dark. They wouldn't find a vampire awake during the daytime and it would be dangerous to move one anyway, during that time. No wonder he'd seen a body bag in the trunk of the rental Tony was driving.

"Bro, you can't be serious; we can't kidnap a vampire—they'd shred us. And if it's the one dad was telling mom and me about, she'd really shred us." Deryn figured he would have to convince Tony to forget this mission.

"All we need to do is find where she is, just before dawn. Then, when she falls asleep, we'll just take her with us. I don't think she'll hurt us, she's not that way," Tony said, climbing inside the car.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Domination
“We even grasp at straws, sometimes, to keep death away from us," he said. "But death is not the enemy. It takes us when our bodies are no longer prepared to carry on in our current lives. Brings us peace and freedom from pain. It is life that is often the enemy. The siren that convinces us to hold onto it as long as we can, even though we are filled with pain or have lived long past our usefulness. My father always said that we should let our life leave us when it is time and do it gladly, instead of with sorrow and bitterness.”

“I told the waiter you're vegetarian, and the chef is working up a special menu to bring out." Kathleen smiled as if she'd pulled off the coup of the century.

"That's so nice of you," I said. Nobody had ever gone to this much trouble for me. I deliberately didn't look at Jayson, in case he was grumpy over the whole thing. I wanted to sigh, too, since Kathleen wanted to woo me more than her son ever would.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Trouble
“Director, I know you're my boss, at least for the time being," vampire agent Ken White told Tony. "But I don't think you know who you were talking to, just then." Ken was driving away from the airport, Tony in the passenger seat.

"Who was I talking to?" Tony turned listlessly to agent White.

"Merrill is a legend among my race," Ken said. "The rumors are that he's the most powerful vampire that exists. The other one that Lissa is engaged to? That's Gavin, the Council's elite Assassin. Wlodek is Head of the Council, as you know. You've managed to piss off three of the most powerful vampires ever. And if you throw Lissa into that mix, because I have to tell you, she can do things I've never seen or heard of before, well, I wouldn't be looking for favors from any of my kind. In fact, depending on how Wlodek reacts and what he says in that phone call you're going to get, he may pull all the vamps out of the Department."

"He can't do that," Tony huffed.

"He can. And if we want to keep on living, we'll do as he says," Ken added. "And since it's Lissa, all she has to do is make a call to the Grand Master and your wolves will be gone, too. You fucked up, boss."

"Yeah. I won't argue with you over that." Tony rubbed a hand over his face.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Sense
“You'd make a lot of people feel better if you'd just wake," Kevis hung the new bag on the pole beside Breanne's bed. "You're safe where you are, I promise. I talked with Graegar—he came to see me. He says that he loves you. Barrigar does, too. You've never really talked with Barrigar. He's one of the best Larentii I know. Doesn't say much, but he sees everything around him." Kevis took a chair beside the bed with a sigh.

"I think Barry's talent for noticing everything around him makes him a really good Protector. I know Conner loves him a lot—just like she loves Graegar. Connegar is Barrigar's son, you know. Barrigar is a wonderful parent. Connegar was Conner's first Larentii child, so he was named after her. Garegar is Graegar's child with Conner, and since he was second-born, he took a variation of his father's name for himself. Are you cold?" Kevis leaned forward and pulled the blanket up a little, covering Breanne's body up to her chin.

"Now," he said, "Pheligar is Renegar's father. Kiarra is Renegar's mother. Renegar is Graegar's father; Grace is Graegar's mother. Graegar is Garegar's father, Conner is Garegar's mother."

"If you don't shut up with Larentii lineage, I may punch you," Breanne's cobalt-blue eyes opened and she blinked in the light filtering through a nearby window. Even Bill heard Kevis' whoop of joy and popped out of his deck chair at a run.”

“Age doesn't cure foolishness—it only tells everyone that someone is an old fool rather than a young one,”
Connie Suttle, Keeper
“Where the fuck did she go?" Jayson snarled, coming off his seat.

"Grocery shopping," Hank held up the note.

"Fuck," Bill grumbled.

"We told her she had to tell us. We didn't tell her we had to approve it," Hank sighed.

"You think she went to that store in Port A?" Bill asked.

"Probably not. She's pissed enough to go to China," Hank moaned. "And since she can speak the language, we'll probably have squid in the fridge when she gets back.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Revolution
“When I got back from the nearest pharmacy after buying the biggest bottle of ibuprofen they had, the delivery truck was blocking my driveway. What wasn't already taken up by Jayson's Mercedes, that is. At that point, I was so out of sorts and my head hurt so badly that I was tempted to throw everybody out of my house. As a vampire, I was strong enough—and pissed enough—to accomplish it without much effort.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I snapped at Jayson Rome, who sat at my kitchen island, drinking coffee and eating oatmeal cookies with Hank and Trina as if he belonged there. He didn't answer, so I went to the cupboard next to the sink, grabbed a glass, filled it with water and washed down four ibuprofen, hoping that would be enough to stop the pounding in my head.

"How did you get out of the bar last night without us seeing you?" Jayson demanded.

"You think I'll tell you anything?" I said. "Get out of my house. I paid for it. It doesn't belong to you anymore. Go get some of those women you're so fond of. Do you pay Hank a finder's fee for pointing them in your direction?"

"You really did fuck up, didn't you?" Trina eyed Jayson distastefully as she crunched into another oatmeal cookie. "Is it your job to ruin all my friendships?"

"Mattress and foundation are on the bed," one of two delivery guys shoved a clipboard in my direction for a signature.

"It looks good—I checked," Trina said.

"Fine." I signed and handed the clipboard back. "If you all will excuse me, I'm going to put sheets on my bed and then do a faceplant. Please be gone when I wake up." I walked down the hall toward my bedroom.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Trouble
“Did it matter that we got the sheets damp? Not to Trajan. Werewolves are all about touch, scent and taste. He was all over me, nipping, licking, tasting, kissing, and then fucking. Lots of fucking. Did he wake up the entire house, howling afterward? Yeah. I'm surprised somebody didn't come in and shoot him for disturbing their sleep.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Revolution
“All of this is in French," Opal observed. She'd walked in halfway through my restocking episode and started reading labels.

"I went to Paris," I informed her.

"No squid," Jayson high-fived Hank. I had no idea why.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Revolution
“And she didn’t take it well. I saw that for myself. I’m convinced that she’s Lissa’s half-sister, now, but she’s in the same position Lissa was in—under Gavin’s thumb."

"You think I haven’t considered that?" Winkler’s words were a growl. "We have no claim on this one, Weldon. The vamps have full control, although Bill says they have no idea she can walk in daylight."

"I heard her asking for fruit, so that’s not the only similarity," Weldon huffed. "Lissa got used by the vampires and killed by her father’s interference."

"Let’s hope Griffin stays the hell away from this one, then.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Revolution
“What if she's dead?" Winkler was close to howling out his misery.

"Winkler, she most likely is. You have to deal with this. You have to. You've seen wolves go down before. This is no different. A member of your Pack is dead. You must move on.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Wager
“I wonder if time might move differently for her or for the Three," Cleo mused.

"If it moves differently for the Three, then it moves differently for my sister," I said softly.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Trouble
“How did you come by this information? he asked.

I attended the Blood Council meeting, I replied.

There are vampires here?

Duh.

I'll take that as a yes.

A good supposition, I agreed.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Domination
“Caffeine. Lots of it. And still I looked as if I'd been dragged across most of Texas and then dumped (unhappily) in a pile of prickly pear. It's funny how Texas comes out in you when you're in Texas. Poor Opal was curious but determined not to ask what had happened after I'd gone to my room the night before.

"What are we looking for?" I asked. I'd probably asked that already, but forgot that I'd asked. That's what kind of day it was.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Trouble
“I can't believe you pulled that off," Ashe shook his head at Kevis. He'd misted in beside the healer and watched as Kevis placed Breanne in a healing sleep. Both worried she'd get no rest with the bite scheduled in the morning after breakfast.

"I don't believe you'll manage that a second time," Kooper changed to humanoid long enough to blink at Ashe and Kevis. "So savor it while you can." He changed back to lion snake and blinked again at both before lowering his head to rest on Breanne's shoulder.

"Dad always says not to argue with those guys," Kevis stated sagely.

Four lion snakes sniffed in unison.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Revolution
“Jayson was lucky I was so tired and out of sorts, because I wanted to fold space, punch him in the mouth and fold back to Austin.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Trouble
“Breanne, I've only met one other person who might do the kinds of things you do," he muttered. "And you do it without being vampire." I blinked at him for a few seconds before letting that go. Let him think I wasn't vampire. It was so much easier that way, and didn't put me in danger with the vamps he had in his department.

"I'm surprised you remember Lissa. She's my sister," I said. Bill stopped in his tracks again.”
Connie Suttle, Blood Trouble
“You are a piece of work, you know that?" I glared at Tony, then turned to René who'd been sitting quietly by, listening to everything and not saying anything. "René, what will you do if I kick his ass?" I jerked my head toward Tony.

"Nothing, as long as you do not inflict permanent harm," René smiled slightly.

I got up to go after Tony, but Wlodek hauled me back.

"We will not allow a brawl between our two youngest," he declared and settled me back in my seat. "Now, Anthony, where may we find your father and does he have other children?”
Connie Suttle, Blood Royal
“Ex-ASD?"

"That's what the Director said. And he's not high on my list, unless it's the list of people I never want to see again."

"What's the problem with Director Keef?"

"Where do you want me to start?"

"Start with the most recent."

"My dead daughter," I snapped and walked away.”
