“Why did it take me so many years to understand that Night is something you can talk to, something that might even decide to watch over you or kiss you just when you're about to crumple from loneliness?”

“I think at first I wanted to kill all of them. Everyone. Because if there were no people left alive, then I’d never have to love one of them again.”

“No matter who I couldn't save before, no matter if I'm stuck being a random mess of a girl, I'm still going to save something.”

“You don't have to be human to be a person. I mean you don't have to be human to be somebody. I don't know you that well, but you seem like way more of a somebody than lots of humans I know! Really.”

“He gave a sudden shake as if he couldn't stand to feel his life still holding on to him.”

“When I used to say I wanted to be anywhere but Brooklyn, I maybe didn't mean it this literally. And, I suddenly understand, I do want to be Vassa--or technically I want to make Vassa into somebody worth being. The only way to become that somebody is to live in a real, substantial world: a world that doesn't follow orders, that's just as willful and independent as I'm going to be. I can only become a whole girl in a place that offers resistance; a place that makes me fight for what I want.”

“If you think the timahk is so silly, Anais," Catarina finally said in a silky, deadly, regal voice, "then by all means. Try breaking it.”

“Naming her—forcing these doctors to know her name—was the best approximation of courage he could manage.”

“You can only tell the truth with music, but music keeps your secrets at the same time.”

“But a man's walking-around body can be a ghost a whole lot easier than his spirit can.”

“He was trying to be heroic, to risk death out of love for her. It was just a kind of heroism she didn’t want.”

“...a soft inward look some into his eyes, as if he was amazed to find himself alive on such a beautiful day.”

“humans were grotesque a lot of the time, but-just once in a while-there was

“The water woke with a tactile vibration just the way Luce's own skin had once woken under the touch of a boy whom she couldn't bear to remember.”

“She hasn't quit staring at me. "what are you, anyway?"
"What are you talking about?" I ask. If she's made up her mind that I'm not a kime, then obviously I must be human. What else is there?
Then I realize that's not what she meant. I already thought she was pretty clueless, but now that's she asking my least favorite question, I'm sure of it. And I'm utterly not in the mood.
"I mean, your not white, right?"
"Okay," I say. With my black thick, wavy hair, and golden brown skin, and green-gold eyes two shades lighter than my face, I've been asked this so many times that I wish I could puke on everyone who brings it up. Just because it's an uncommon combination, why would anyone think I owe them an explanation? It's not like anybody wants to hear the whole list, anyway.
"I'm a person," I tell her. "A girl if you want to be picky. My name is Ada Halcyon Lahey, and I'm twelve.”

“We’re twice lost. The humans lost us the first time, then we were lost to other mermaids, too. Now there’s nothing left to lose us, except life, and the way things are going, that shouldn’t take long either!”

“They considered a number of structures DNA might have. There was more than one possibility, you see. But they pursued the famous double helix because of its beauty. Because it was a spiral staircase fit for life itself to climb, like a lady elegantly ascending to natures present multiplicity. Their intuition proved correct. Beauty is what led them to the truth, Gabriel. May it do the same for us.”
