“Life isn’t smooth, but it’s the bumps that help us find out who we are. And it’s handling the bumps that gives us courage.”

“From Bought: The Greek's Innocent Virgin ... He drew in a long breath. ‘You are very difficult to please.’
‘No, I’m not. I’m easy to please. When you peel my orange for breakfast, you please me. When you rub my shoulders before I go to sleep, that pleases me. When you defend me from a nasty comment, that pleases me. I’m easy to please, Angelos.’ Her heart was pounding. ‘Just don’t try and buy me.”

“I love being single. It's my choice, not a sentence. It's not a state that I'm in until someone better comes along. Don't feel sorry for me. I love my life."
"Don't you want someone to snuggle up to at night?"
"No. this way, I never have to fight for the duvet, I can sleep diagonally across the bed and I can read until four in the morning."
"A book can't take the place of a man!"
"I disagree. A book can give you most things a relationship can. It can make you laugh, it can make you cry, it can transport you to different worlds and teach you things. You can even take it out to dinner. And if it bores you, you can move on. Which is pretty much what happens in real life.”

“I want to introduce the world to my princess.’
In a state of disbelief, Izzy took his hand and they walked back towards the stage.
Happiness bubbled up inside her as it slowly dawned on her that this was real. She lifted her
face to look at him. ‘I think I’m going to look cute in a tiara. I’ve never worn anything sparkly on
my head before.’
He laughed and tightened his grip on her hand. ‘First thing tomorrow I’m going to buy you one.’
‘Slow down.’ She winced and stooped to fiddle with her feet. ‘My shoes are hurting.’
‘This is not news. Your shoes are always hurting, tesoro.’
‘Do princesses absolutely have to wear shoes at all times?’
A slow smile spread across his face and he scooped her into his arms and carried her the last
few steps onto the stage. ‘Of course not. Didn’t you read Cinderella?”

“Books had always been a comfort to her. More than comfort. There were times when reading came close to an addiction.
When things had been tough at home, Harriet’s solution had been to remove herself from life and disappear. She’d chosen to be invisible. Sometimes physically, by hiding under the table, but sometimes psychologically by diving into a literary world unlike her own.
As a child she’d liked to sink into the pages and lose herself for hours at a time. When she was reading, she didn’t just leave her own life behind, she stepped into someone else’s. There were times when she’d read for hours without noticing the passage of time or the onset of darkness. When it grew too dark to read, she simply switched on her flashlight and read under the covers so that she didn’t disturb her sister, who was sleeping in the next bed. At school, she carried her book around. When things were difficult, the weight of her bag would comfort her. It helped just to know the book was there, waiting for her. At various points in the day she’d feel the edges bump against her thigh, reminding her of its existence. It was like having a friend close by, telling her I’m still here and we can spend time together later.
Even now, more than a decade on from that difficult time of her life, she found herself instinctively reaching for a book when she was stressed. Comfort was different things to different people. To some it was a bar of chocolate or a glass of wine, a run in the park or coffee with a friend.
To Harriet, it was a book.”

“I’m still sad. Part of me will always be sad, and there are days when I’m crushed by it. But the truth is that sometimes life sends you change that you wouldn’t have chosen, and this was one of those times. I had no choice about losing Cameron, but I do have a choice about what I do with my life from now on. I miss him terribly, but I intend to get out of bed and keep living, no matter how hard that feels. And all the memories can come along with me.”
