“Mungo, Gillis, the earl is awake,” a gravelly old voice below the window gasped. Max turned his head to gaze below him. A gaggle of old men sat huddled under the window, like a gathering of geriatric Romeos from a Shakespeare revival.”

“Max stood there for a while. The man finished his meal and said, “Where are you headed, young man?”
“I don’t know.”
“Aha! There is your problem. You'll never get there if you don’t know where you are going. On that note, I say good day to you, Max.”
Max watched as the old man left. His anger had propelled him up the mountain, yet he did not know where he was going. Max hadn’t even changed clothes. He still wore the new suit and dress shoes he had worn to meet the auditor.
“Huh… I found a Zen master in a hole-ridden plaid,” Max told himself. Max looked out of the door and saw the flock of sheep come up over the horizon. His heart beat faster as he expected Isobel to be with them. Instead, Ken the Watcher guarded the sheep.
“Don’t stay too long, or the earl will charge you rent, young man,” Ken said with a laugh to Max.
“I’d never get rich that way,” Max said to himself. He then went out from where the sheep had come, his feet moving him towards the White Mountain of Cairnbahan.”

“You’re welcome, Daddy. Say, who is decanting next? I had Martha on my scorecard, but with, yours truly, up and running, I figured you’d probably have changed the order around.”
“Yes, Martha’s next. I figure it is fifty-fifty odds that you’ll probably break something on that shell of yours, and she’ll need to fix it.”
“Sweet,” Jason said. “She gives me all the cool space bandages when I get boo-boos.”
DADDIE smiled. “Well, I’m using your roster, so be prepared. Li Mei will decant after that, and she’s gunning for your job.”
Jason smiled and flexed. “Bring it. No one can match my awesomeness.”
DADDIE nodded and said, “Good, that’s what I want to hear. If everyone has that attitude, we’ll do just fine, never mind what Lloyd’s of London said.”

“Wow, you guys, and gal, look so rugged, can I get a picture?” Possum said.
“Only if you’re quick,” Hot dog said. Jurgen and Maricela grabbed seats. Possum put the camera up to his head and took the shot. As soon as Possum finished Hot dog yanked him into the APC. The APC started rolling, simultaneously closing its hatch. Possum sat next to Jurgen.
“Aw, man, this always happens to me. We have to go back, man!” Possum said.
“No can do. Why you want to go back?” Jurgen said.
“Man, I totally forgot to take the lens cap off! I totally blew my shot,” Possum said.
“Tough break,” Jurgen said. Possum began bemoaning how the universe hated him.”

“DADDIE sat looking at the semi-transparent Karl. Finally, he said, “How are you here? Wait, this makes no sense. I’m at the ballpark.”
“Think back. What do you remember before you were here?” Karl asked.
“Mommy, Merlyna, Josie, and I were talking. Merlyna stormed out, and then Mommy just disappeared…” DADDIE said, “Geez, Karl, I’m scared.”
“Don’t be. That’s why I am here,” said Karl.
“What happens if I don’t make it,” DADDIE asked.
“The colony will most assuredly die, Daddy. They all need you.”
“I meant what will happen to me… Will I dream?” DADDIE asked, his avatar looking afraid.
“I don’t know. I barely have any understanding of what will happen to us organics when we die, and most of what I believe is like voodoo and shamanism to other humans these days. I believe that all sentient life will awaken in a new, perfected universe. I think that will include AIs like you, too. But I do know that you don’t have to go gently into the night. You can fight back like you always do. Don’t give up the game when you’re so close to winning,” Karl said.”
