“In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus says to his disciples: “Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me” (10:16). Notice the direct line of authority: The Father sends the Son, and the Son sends the apostles with his authority, such that listening to them (and the men whom they in turn authorize) is equivalent to listening to Jesus and the Father.”

“Robert was silent for a long moment, watching his breath form clouds in the frigid air. “My grandfather fought in Vietnam,” he finally said. “Spent three years in a camp not so different from this one. When I joined up, he told me something I didn’t understand until now.”
He turned to face Alvarez, the young man’s features blurry on his blind side. “He said, ‘The enemy can take your freedom, your health, even parts of your body. But they can only take your humanity if you hand it over willingly.’”
Alvarez nodded slowly.
“I’ve lost my eye,” Robert continued, gesturing to his scarred face. “I’ve lost whatever future I thought I had. But I refuse to let them take anything else.”

“But Protestants in general are usually not so exact in their dating estimates, and instead claim that corruption entered into the Church somewhere between the second and sixth centuries. The dates vary according to when a particular Protestant, in studying the historical evidence, discovers a doctrine or practice of the Church that he believes is heretical.”

“Are the Scriptures clear (perspicuous)? That is, can a literate, faithful Christian read the Bible and understand what God is saying? The answer depends upon how high or low we set the bar for “understanding” and how much or how little we allow for differences in that understanding. For example, setting the bar low, all Christians would agree that the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ came for our salvation by dying on the Cross. Further, the belief that Jesus was both truly God and truly man is a teaching that most Christians throughout history have held, though both of those doctrines were challenged in significant ways in early Christian history. But once we go a bit more in-depth and get into such questions as how Jesus saves a person and what, exactly, one needs to do in order to be saved by Christ, we run into all manner of differences among Christian traditions.”
