“As I stumble through this life
help me to create more laughter than tears, dispense more cheer than gloom, spread more joy than despair. Never let me become so indifferent that I will fail to see the wonder in the eyes of a child, or the twinkle in the eyes of the aged. Never let me forget that my total effort is to cheer people, make them happy, and forget momentarily all the unpleasantness in their lives. And in my final moment, may I hear You whisper, 'When you made My people smile, you made Me smile.”

“Because God took one look at Adam and said, 'Wow. This guy's going to need all the help he can get.' And here we are.”

“...a lot of people never find the person God created them to be. They’re too busy trying to live up to other people’s expectations, or they try to create themselves in the image of a person they admire or envy. Just because we respect someone or think their life might be more exciting than ours doesn’t mean God created us to be just like them. Sometimes we have to ignore the people in our lives so we can hear the voice of God...But making a decision to put someone else first out of love isn’t the same thing as putting them first out of fear. Because you’re afraid they won’t love you if you don’t act the way they might want you to.”

“I believe it’s God’s will for us to live out our lives. The Bible says His plan is to give us long life. So why do some people die early? I have no idea. All I can tell you is this. I know God. But I also know evil. I’ve looked into its eyes. The devil is real. We’re in a war. No matter how hard soldiers try to stay safe, sometimes they get shot. It’s really important to remember that the enemy may win a battle, but the truth is, he’s already lost the war.”

“Religion is a set of beliefs, but it isn’t necessarily a relationship with God. Jesus had some pretty harsh things to say about the religious leaders of His day.”

“The urge to kiss him was strong. Instead, she patted his unwrapped shoulder. "Be good," she said, her voice husky. Before she said or did anything embarrassing, she left the room, almost running into a woman carrying a tray into Noah's room. Kaely apologized and hurried down the hall. She was having feelings for Noah she couldn't handle. She wanted him in her life, but things couldn't go on like this. They just couldn't. Her job was everything to her, and she couldn't allow anything to get in the way. Even Noah.”

“Kaely pushed herself off the arm of the couch and plopped down next to him. She leaned her head against his shoulder.
"Thank you. I'm not sure I could do this without you. I'll be fine. Really."
Her assurance sounded hollow. Kaely would do whatever she had to do to prepare herself for what she would face. But could she pull it off? Noah fought against the urge to stroke her hair. If he said too much, made the wrong move, he could lose himself in her. And he couldn't take that chance. Not now. Not ever. He quelled the rush of emotion that surged through him.
"We're friend and partners," he said in carefully measured tones. "I meant it when I told you I'll always be there when you need me. Always.”

“God loves us perfectly. He is love, and He can heal all the hurt inside you. I can’t do it. No human being can. Including you. Only one person can reach down into our messed-up souls. You don’t have to believe that just because I said it. You just have to give Him a chance. Bruised, battered, scarred . . . He doesn’t care. He’s got the answer to all of it. Healing for everything that hurts us.”

“She'd wondered once if someday Noah might feel that way about her, but not anymore. He'd closed that door. As she watched him eat his food, a wave of deep-seated emotion washed though her. It startled her enough that she let out a small cry.”

“He put his hat back on his head and said good-bye to Charity, who continued to stare at him with wide eyes. She didn’t say anything in response to his gesture. I started to chastise my daughter for being rude, but before I could get a word out, she took a deep breath, turned toward me and said, “Mama, this man looks just like Prince Phillip . . . from Sleeping Beauty.” She fastened her gaze back on Noah, staring at him with an expression that bordered on adoration. “Are you Prince Phillip? My mama has been waiting for you such a long, long time.”

“He was much more sensitive than he let on, which was one of the...Kaely almost gasped. If she hadn't reined it in, her finished thought would have been reasons I love him so much.
As Noah came back to sit down, Kaely looked away from him. Did she truly love him? It's not possible. She didn't want to love anyone. She wasn't ready.”

“Noah was quiet, and Kaely snuck another look at him. His expression was taut and his lips were thinned.
"You're really hurting, aren't you?"
"It's not that, Kaely."
"Then what is it?"
"You did it again. You put yourself in danger."
She was startled by the anger in his voice. "Like I said, I wanted to make sure Jack incriminated himself. Then when Sam started to confess-"
"Stop it," Noah barked. "Just stop it."
"I don't understand."
"Yes, you do. We've been over this and over this. You're reckless with your life. You take chances you don't have to. Josh said the same thing, that you should have signaled him earlier. I blame him too. He was in charge. He should have gotten you out of there before things went so far, but in the end, the fault lies with you."
Kaely didn't know what to say. Noah had never been this angry with her before.
"I don't know if I can work with you anymore."
Kaely couldn't believe her ears.
"I'm saying that I care about you. I can't stand by and watch you kill yourself. I won't."
Kaely felt as if her whole body had suddenly grown cold. "Noah, please. We can work this out. You're the only person in the world I trust."
"Trust?" His laugh was bitter and shocked her.
"Yes, I trust you."
"Okay, Kaely. Who is the friend who helped you? The only who tried to steer you in the right direction? As far as I know, the only people who knew what was going on besides me were Josh, Jason, and Tuck. Oh, and Sam, but it couldn't have been him."
Kaely hesitated as she wrestled with what to say. Suddenly the image of the kiss she gave Noah in the hospital popped into her mind. She couldn't lose him. She just couldn't.”
