“I have come to realize that a lot of people are stuck in their spiritual journey, and they need freedom. Some are in a marriage crisis and want to get better, but they can’t find a path to wholeness. The church hasn’t helped enough of these people get healthy enough to have a healthy relationship. Others are stuck in a sin pattern. The church has too often told them, “Don’t do that” without giving them the help they need to get free. I’ve seen people tormented by the power of the enemy, and they didn’t know how to access the power of God to find freedom from Satan’s evil grip.”

“Maturity is a choice we have to make and a price we have to pay, and all the talent in the world can’t compensate for immaturity. It is the development of our character and the depth of our intimacy that impresses God. Salvation is free. Maturity comes at a cost.”

“Jesus is a healer, and He has come to heal us: body, soul, and spirit. This book focuses on the healing of the soul. Jesus can lead us out of brokenness into wholeness, and these Soul Care Principles from Scripture are profound healing tools of God.”

“An external change cannot alleviate an internal torment. A change of circumstances will not overcome the power of a lie. You must renew your mind and reconstruct the foundation of your soul upon the truth of who you are in Christ, or you will not experience deep change. If you grew up feeling insecure, only the security of Christ’s eternal love revealed by the Spirit can set you free.”

“It is cosmic treason for the church to possess the keys of the Kingdom and not to utilize them to set the captives free.”

“Faith is a key that unlocks the treasure house of God that is stocked with answered prayers. Faith is a conduit that carries the presence and power of God right into the midst of his people. Faith is a difference-maker, a future-shaper, a bondage-breaker, a Kingdom-mover.”

“Toxic shame is a sense that you are not lovable. That something is wrong with you. To break toxic shame, you must get your eyes off yourself and onto Jesus. Toxic shame, ironically, is the flip side of the coin of pride. With toxic shame, you are looking to make something of yourself, to prove your worth by what you do and what you have. To break free from this shame, you have to repent of pride. You have to confess that you have not believed what God has told you about yourself, that you are deeply loved. It is pride to reject God’s love because you feel unworthy. When you are stuck in toxic shame, you often tell yourself, God loves other people, just not me. That is a proud, eyes-on-me statement. You think you know more than God. Essentially, you are calling God a liar. You must repent of your pride, take your eyes off yourself, and put your eyes on Jesus. You must catch these toxic statements you are making to yourself and break the cycle.”

“Too often in the church we talk about the presence and power of God, but we don’t actually see any demonstration of it. This wasn’t true in the early church. Paul wrote, “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power” (1 Corinthians 2:4, 5).”

“Often people practice what I call “content listening.” Content listening is when your spouse says to you, “I need you to help more around the house.” And you respond by repeating back the content in your own words: “So, you would feel more supported if I helped more around the house.” We are simply making sure we understand each other with the content of what is being conveyed. But there is a much deeper level of listening. It is what I call “emotional listening.” Now, I am not just listening to the content of what you are communicating, I am also listening to the emotional tone and weight behind your words. I am picking up on the intent. I couldn’t offer Jen a five-gallon apology when I was only content listening because I didn’t know there was a five-gallon hurt. I needed to hear her at a deeper level. I had to understand how deeply she was hurt. I needed to hear her heart.”

“Here is the truth that can set you free: The issue of your value is settled at the cross. On the cross, the Father said to you and me, “You are of infinite worth to me. I declare you to be worthy of my Son’s blood.” Paul said, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” If Jesus died for us, then what can diminish our worth? Not rejection, not enemies, not hatred, not criticism, not abandonment, not abuse, not a spouse who leaves you or no longer loves you, not bad performances, not failures, not ‘C’ talks, not circumstances out of your control, or people beyond your reach. Nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ.”

“The baptism of the Spirit is God’s ultimate purpose for His people. He didn’t save us so we could go to Heaven. He saved us so He could fill us so full of Himself we could have intimacy with Him, we could become more like Him, and we could change the world with Him.”

“Addictions have a couple of things in common: they are rooted in shame, and they are narcissistic. Because addictions are focused on self-gratification, practicing a spiritual discipline that focuses on self-denial counteracts the behavior.”

“The second special case of identity repair is the bent will. If you grew up in a home where you were abused—physically, spiritually, emotionally, or sexually—your will gets bent. When someone has been bullied, his or her will gets bent toward the bully. They are often overpowered, so they have no choice but to yield to the stronger abuser. But after living this way for some time, the will gets badly bent, and the person feels like a victim. Your soul has to catch up to the reality of what has transpired in your spirit in Christ. The reality is that you may have been victimized, but you are not a victim. In Christ, you are more than a conqueror. In Christ, you have what it takes to overcome. This is true in your spirit, but it surely doesn’t feel that way in your soul. Your soul has to catch up to the reality of what has transpired in your spirit in Christ. The problem is that the person with the bent will once again has their eyes focused on themselves.”

“God gave us our mind and our imagination. He has told us to renew our mind. Our minds have been damaged by some of the tragic events which we have locked away in our memories, and God can renew our mind by revealing Jesus’ presence in these past events and healing our memories by involving our imaginations.”

“The issue of your value is settled at the cross. This is the truth that you must hold on to. This is the truth that you must appropriate every time the lies threaten your security, value, and identity. This is what God has accomplished in your spirit, and what you must hold on to and work out in your soul. This is the foundation that you must build your life on. Upon this foundation you can find peace, love, acceptance, security, significance, and all you need in life.”
