“Guilt. A painful, lonely feeling. It seeps into your pores slowly as you go through life day by day. Like a disease, it blackens your heart with thoughts and memories of what you did, or in my case, what you didn’t do.”

“Are you safe?”
“Yes, Skye.” I leaned down, holding her eyes with my own. “I promise you, I am safe.”

“You'll always carry these memories in your heart, baby. As for tomorrow, you’ll get through it. We all will, and then we’ll get through the next day and the one after that. This whole town will; minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. We will keep going.”

“So let’s get this straight right now. Have you ever seen a teen movie or TV show with a big, raging party scene? Get that out of your mind. This is high school, not college, and it’s Texas. In Texas, we do bonfires on the ranch…not mansions and hotel rooms. We do daisy dukes, backward baseball caps and faded blue jeans…not sparkling cocktail dresses or fancy button ups. I love Texas. I love the laid-back, country style of my hometown and my people.”

“She huffed at me, “That I knew you were here. It’s a coincidence. I mean, of course you would follow me, right? I ran out of the room in a fit! What are you, a boy scout?”
She laughed, “Am I your next badge? The ‘Save Skye Martin from herself’ badge?” she finished in a disgusted voice, as she came to stand in front of me.
I watched the myriad of expressions roll across her face: worry, confusion, fear - they were all there, as she stood toe-to-toe with me. When I didn’t answer her fast enough, she turned to walk away.
“Hey, Skye,” I called after her. “I’m not a boy scout.”
She turned, but kept on walking; shrugging her shoulders. “Yeah, so?”
I took a deep breath, and then I let her in on one of the many secrets I had.
“I’m not a boy scout, but I am here to save you…I’m a Guardian.”
