“There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved”.5”

“A 2006 Danish study found that, after decades of exposure, the louse population now exhibits a high level of resistance to the most commonly used chemicals in lice shampoo—malathion and permethrin.5 In some trials, 75 percent of lice survived treatment with these poisons. The ability of the lice to withstand a previously deadly chemical attack is due to a mutation in one of their genes. That mutation has perhaps always been present in a section of the louse population, without necessarily bringing any advantages or disadvantages. But when we started treating head lice with permethrin, lice with this protective gene suddenly had an advantage. And because their descendants thrived and survived, the gene is now more widespread in the population, as are more and more permethrin-resistant lice. Luckily, they are no more immune to patient and repeated treatment with a fine-toothed comb than their non-resistant cousins!”
