“Maya felt her own form shifting. The whirlpool of stars came into view again, only this time above rather than below her. She readied herself for the dizzying trip back through the vortex. The pressure of the ascent was a crushing force on her body. But did she even have a body? She looked at her arm, seeing only star-filled space.
She shot out of the vortex and halted in the air, in the dark. But not hovering, as before. Sitting. Sitting on a rocky ledge in the stillness of a pitch-black cave. She reached out and was comforted when she took hold of a handful of fur coat.
