“You need to just fuck already. Get it over with before you kill each other."

"Ah, always the romantic, Emmy," Joey says.

"I'm so serious," she drawls in a drunken slur. "I don't know why you didn't pull the trigger last night, girl."

"I tried!" I say. "But now he says I have to be sober if I want to hook up with him, and being sober on the road is for pussies."

"Hey, pussies are tough," she says. "You should've seen the thrashing mine took last night."

"Nope," I say. "No thank you.”

“Are they always like that?"

"Yes," Joey says. "Unless they're cursing each other out, but I think that's just part of their mating ritual or foreplay or whatever.”

“You don't look better through beer goggles," she says. "The problem is you look way too fine without them. You're like a damn demigod."

"Wait, just a demigod? I was shooting for Zeus."

"Ask me after we ... you know."

"After you see my thunderbolt?"

"Jesus Christ, you're impossible.”

“You're going to go after that dream for both of us. And then, one day when it all comes true, I want you to look back and remember me as the open door--not the cage.”

“Sunny, I can't believe you and Cole got married before me and Travis."

"Travis married us in the Motel 6 parking lot last night, remember? You were my maid of honor and everything."

"Goddamn, I'm never drinking PBR again," she says and makes a fake retching sound.”

“What else did you imagine?" His voice is low and rough and oh, so fucking sexy. "Tell me what happens next."

"You already know, " I whisper. "All the very good, very wrong things."

"I want to hear you say it."

"Okay," I say through my teeth. "You fuck me until I forget my own name."

"Wrong," he says. "I fuck you until the only name you know is mine.”

“Oh yeah, Cole?" Joey says, making the world's dopiest body-builder pose. "You like that?"

"Yeah, maybe I should share a bed with you tonight," Cole says. "You can be the big spoon.”

“Oh, yes, that's right--my terms. I'm sorry, but you'll have to state clearly, for the record, in your own words, your clear-minded and sober intention to ride my dick. Actually, let me go get a witness, just to be on the safe side ...”

“Travis," I whisper, like I'm trying to get his attention in a movie theater. He glances up at me, shifts his eyes to the side to check for supervillains or anyone else I might be wary of hearing me.

"What?" he whispers back. Then he hands me the syrup.

"What happened last night ..." I start to say, but I can't continue because I am choking on the awkward.

"Was really awesome?" He finishes the sentence for me with a crooked smile and I die. Then he lowers his voice to a whisper again. "I thought so, too."

"That's not what I was going to say."

"Really?" he asks in mock surprise. "Because last night you seemed to think it was pretty awesome. That is, if all the orgasms were any indicator."

Now I'm choking on my coffee and ready to hide my own face in my napkin. He's got a verifiable point, though.

"Wait, you weren't faking it, were you? For my ego's sake?"

I shake my head no. No, I wasn't faking it, and no, you are not teasing me about this. No, you are not.

"Travis, I'm serious."

"I'm sorry," he says. "I'm serious, too. Last night really was awesome.”

“Are you busy?" I ask.

"I'm working on a paper. Recall? The phone conversation we had fifteen minutes ago?"

I glance up at a clock in the hall, and then back at his smart-ass mouth.

"It was twenty minutes ago."

"I need coffee," he says, and why is he being such an adorable dick, still smiling at me like that? "Want to walk up to Dunkin' Donuts?"

"What about Millie?" I say.

"What about her?"

"Does she want any?"

"Should we call her and ask?"

"Isn't she upstairs?"

"How hard did you hit your head last night?”

“I've been wondering all day what flavor lip gloss you've got on."

"Dr. Pepper," I say, before my brain starts to work again.

"Lip Smackers?" He laughs. "Really?"

"My mom always puts a ton of them in my stocking at Christmas," I try to explain, but really, what's the point now? He already knows my taste in cosmetics hasn't changed since the seventh grade.

"I like it."

"You do?"

"Well, let me double-check," he says, and then he licks his bottom lip before he kisses me again. I feel the tip of his tongue soft against mine, taste the sweetness of his breath as he kisses me deeper. Then he moves his lips, all warm and soft over to my ear and kisses me there until I can't speak.”

“our first night out and she's already cock blocking me.”

“What about Millie?"

"Millie?" he says, spinning back around to face me. "Oh yes, Millie Vagaboss. Let's definitely talk about her." His sarcasm really isn't bad for a Midwestern boy.

"It's none of my business, really," I say as I realize I don't actually want to hear this, most likely.

"No, no, it's your business, especially since you gave her your blessing to basically dry hump me in the van last night."

"What the hell?" I think I feel my nostrils flaring, but I really hope not. "I did?"

"Yeah, thanks for that," he says. "She told me you said there's nothing going on between us, and you were cool if she hooked up with me, like I'm some guy in your personal boy harem and you're giving me to her as a token of your appreciation."

"It was so not like that! Are you kidding me?"

"She was really drunk," he says. "But that was the gist of it, yeah."

Now I'm mad. I have no idea why, since I basically did tell Millie she was free to go for it with Bean.

"What's wrong?" he says. "Did you really expect to find her hiding in my closet? Were you going to fight for my honor or something?"

"Stop making fun of me."

"Stop giving me to your friends like I'm some kind of manslut.”
