“The only way to true healing and freedom is by forgiving those who have hurt you.”

“Not at all. What I mean is that God places different burdens on each heart. Can you imagine if every single Christian and pastor had the same calling? What would happen to all the other needs in the world — or even in this town, for that matter? “God calls all of us in a unique way. As none of us are created identically in appearance or how we think, or feel, we’re also not given the same gifts. “We must be responsible for where God plants us, rather than judge others for not being in the same place. That’s not to say that our calling can’t change, or we might see a hardship and strive to fix it. But if we don’t, then we’re accountable to God, rather than to one another. Does”

“Am I a sinner, or less of a Christian than you, because my ministry might be to aid someone other than those you feel drawn to help?” Her words were even and calm, but nonetheless, they dug deep. Julia winced. “I wasn’t pointing my finger at you.” “Ah, but weren’t you?” Wilma leaned forward, her expression soft and kind, almost giving lie to her direct words. “I’m sure you didn’t think of it that way, but aren’t you judging others for what you perceive as their sin of not caring?”

“It was important that I experience disappointments and work for what I wanted, for it to have meaning. Besides, if life always comes easily, there would be very little passion to pour into one’s work.”

“not forgiving leads to deep-rooted anger and bitterness and will poison the one holding onto it, much more than the person it’s directed towards.”

“there when jumping lessons took place, that’s all.” Kate turned to the arena again. “It’s not a very big class yet. Just four riders. Melissa and three women I don’t know. One of them boards her mare here, and I think Mom said the other two trailered their horses in for the lesson. Melissa’s mom agreed to let her take a group lesson to”

“He wants to set you free from the bitterness and pain you’ve been carrying, but He can’t as long as you hold onto the hurt. Forgiving isn’t saying what they did is right, it’s simply letting go of the past and choosing to walk toward God’s light and love, instead of toward darkness.” “If I ever go back home, I’ll have nothing to do with those people.” Unease rose up in Julia at the thought, leaving her almost physically ill. Wilma shook her head, her face serious. “God doesn’t require we be friends with those who hurt us or even return to a previous relationship. That’s not to say you couldn’t be courteous should you meet one of the church members on the street, but forgiveness doesn’t necessitate friendship. Sometimes it even requires a separation from the person, for our own safety, and that’s as it should be.”

“nodded, her heart filled with sympathy toward this man and ire at his wife. “I can only imagine. But you spoke correctly when you said you were not good enough to keep God’s love.” Charles gaped. “Huh?” “None of us are, although I tried to tell myself that I was a good person and others did not understand me. I suppose I still feel that way at times, but it is not true, you know. We aren’t good enough to earn God’s love. He gives it to us as a gift of grace, not because we did anything to earn it. He loves us as much as He loves His Son, Jesus. When you understand that, you will have a different outlook on love.” He hung his head. “I’m a low-down polecat who’s done little good in this life, so that’s hard for me to accept, but I’ll have to take your word for it. I never knowed you to lie, Frances.” His eyes looked up, and he reached across the table, palm up. “I’d like to know more about that kind of love, truly I would. You make it sound like somethin’ worth havin’. But I’m not sure I can do it all alone. Would you make an old man happy and be my friend while I try to figure all this out?” She slipped her hand into his and gave his fingers a soft squeeze, her mind returning to the offer of friendship given to her by Wilma a few months before. Gratitude welled in her heart like a spring of clean water rinsing out the grime and grit of the world. Frances smiled. “It is the least I can do, Charles. I would be proud to help you learn how to stand strong and depend on God’s love instead of your own pride. I will admit, it is not an easy lesson, and you may take more steps backward than forward, but if you continue the journey, you will be more than happy with the results at its completion.”
