Mario Gomboli è grafico, illustratore, sceneggiatore di comics (Tilt, Diabolik, storie per Massimo Mattioli e Milo Manara), ideatore di Caroselli, curatore di mostre (e negli anni Settanta vicedirettore del Salone Internazionale dei Comics a Lucca).

Ha fondato nel 1972 lo Studio Arcoquattro.

Docente universitario alla facoltà di Architettura in Algeria (1982-1983) ed insegnante dell'Istituto Europeo di Design, è il creatore delle illustrazioni dello straordinario Zoo Pazzo, nato quasi per caso nel 1972 e portato avanti negli anni sotto varie forme. Ha ideato più di cento libri per l'infanzia tradotti in tutto il mondo.
