Dumitru Trancă (4 aprilie 1927, Craiova) este un poet, prozator şi traducător. Este fiul Elenei (născută Pascu) şi al lui Gheorghe Trancă, plutonier major. În oraşul natal face cursul primar şi Liceul Militar „D.A. Sturdza", apoi Colegiul „Carol I", absolvit în 1946. Îşi continuă studiile la Facultatea de Litere, secţia italiană, a Universităţii din Bucureşti. Din 1950 va fi redactor la Editura Politică, din 1956 şef de serviciu şi director ştiinţific al Bibliotecii Centrale de Stat, din 1960 director al Editurii pentru Literatura Univesală, din 1962 director general al Centralei Editurilor şi Difuzării Cărţii, iar din 1969 al Editurii Enciclopedice Române.
