Sosyoloji lisans derecesini 1981 yılında Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi'nde aldı. 1985 yılında aynı bölümde yüksek lisans derecesini, 1987 yılında California Üniversitesi, Santa Cruz sosyoloji bölümünde ikinci bir yüksek lisans derecesini ve 1993 yılında aynı üniversiteden sosyoloji doktora derecesini aldı. Oberlin College kadın araştırmaları bölümünde, New York Üniversitesi yakın doğu araştırmaları programında ve Viyana Üniversitesi sosyal ve kültürel antropoloji bölümünde ve Columbia Üniversitesi’nde ziyaretçi öğretim üyesi olarak bulundu ve dersler verdi.
