Giovanni Testori, critico d'arte, poeta, autore teatrale e romanziere, è stato tra le personalità intellettuali più complesse del secondo Novecento. Negli anni Cinquanta ha raccontato la periferia milanese nel ciclo I segreti di Milano. Per il teatro, con la Trilogia degli scarrozzanti (L'Ambleto, Macbetto e Edipus), ha creato una personalissima lingua drammaturgica, proseguita con gli oratori di argomento sacro, quali Conversazione con la morte, Interrogatorio a Maria e Factum est, e culminata con la messa in scena del romanzo In exitu, uno dei suoi capolavori.
