Cursó estudios de Educación Física y de Filología Vasca, campo en el que se doctoró, además de formarse en piano y canto en conservatorios de Bilbao y Vitoria.

Arretxe ha desarrollado la mayor parte de su carrera en lengua vasca, siendo traducido de manera habitual al castellano. Inició su carrera literaria a principios de los años noventa, actividad que combina con conferencias y actividades musicales.

Además, Arretxe es un apasionado viajero, afición que ha plasmado en varios libros. También ha realizado incursiones dentro del territorio de la novela negra, de entre las que habría que destacar títulos como Sueños de Tánger.
