Indoloog en voormalige Indische ambtenaar, die na een kortstondig Tweede Kamerlidmaatschap voor de ARP Gouverneur van Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea was. Promoveerde op een sociologische studie over Nieuw-Guinea en publiceerde diverse wetenschappelijke werken. Was vanaf 1960 hoogleraar culturele antropologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht en directeur bij het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen.
