Diedre Reed Digene Farrar gives a painfully honest account of childhood sexual abuse and its damaging physical and emotional affects. Her story highlights the necessity of mandated reporting. As a teacher of young children, I shuddered each time she reached out to an adult and was 'not believed'. Thankfully now in schools, all educators, librarians, cafeteria workers, office clerks and custodians are required to report suspected abuse.

I was recently able to use Digene's book as a reference for a group of teachers. One of our instructors shared an incident of a student's suppressed memories being activated while playing a community building game, just as 9/11 dredged up memories for Digene. The teachers immediately needed answers, "What do we do if something like that happens?" I was grateful that I was able to bring Digene's book to class the next day to add to our discussion.

In Part Two, Digene gives specific signs and symptoms that teachers and parents can look for that may indicate sexual abuse. She tells about triggers, flashbacks, struggles with food and self esteem, and other things a vigilant adult may notice. She discusses preventative measures that can be incorporated in classrooms. She includes an extensive list of resources that can aid and inform.

As an educator I appreciate Digene's guidance in helping students and their families living with trauma...
