Mathieu Gabella est né le 29 juillet 1976 à Rouen, en Normandie. Il considère la BD comme un moyen de raconter des histoires, de voyager et s'évader. Il trouve son inspiration dans le fantastique au sens large, l'Histoire, les sciences, le cinéma et voue une admiration sans bornes à deux auteurs vedettes : Alan Moore et Charlie Kaufman. Avec Idoles, il avait envie de faire une histoire de super héros. Il s'est inspiré de l'actualité du moment : les élections de 2002 en France avec la montée de l'extrême droite, le voyeurisme télé avec le Loft et le thème du champion.
