“Many Christians have a simplistic concept of temptation that goes something like this: Satan, at a particular moment, flits to our side and whispers “Do it,” and we either do or do not, depending upon our spiritual strength at that moment. We might be more consistently victorious in not “doing it” if we realized that there is much more to temptation than the overt, momentary solicitation to evil and that our strength or weakness at that moment is based upon attitudes that have been forming for weeks, months, even years prior.”

“We mutter and sputter. We fume and we spurt. We mumble and grumble; Our feelings get hurt. We can’t understand things. Our vision grows dim, When all that we need Is a moment with him.”

“A few years ago Stuart Chase’s article “How Language Shapes Our Thoughts” appeared in Harper’s, emphasizing how closely language and thoughts are integrated. According to Chase, language “molds one’s whole outlook on life,” for “thinking follows the tracks laid down in one’s language.” Knowing about this integration of language and thoughts helps us to understand that what we say often reflects what we are. The state of our heart and mind will show up in our words, for “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34).”
