She had a massive back of sun-bleached grey feathers, was as muscled as a pit bull, and intimidating as hell….”  H is for Hawk, by Helen… Continue reading Revisiting H Is for Hawk → Read more of this blog post »

I always welcome writing by Terry Tempest Williams. This one is a bit of a slog, though. Seems as though it needs a more substantial theme to tie the essays together. Written in a journal or memoir style, it partly takes place during the pandemic. Gi ...more

Susan Orlean is a fantastic writer; I've read The Orchid Thief and The Library Book. (I also saw the movie Adaptation which, at the time I pretty much enjoyed but hasn't aged well with me - what I recall of it, the movie seemed pretentious and muddle ...more

How Can I Help? by Douglas W. Tallamy
"The information in this book is good. Maybe great.

The format of this book is a train wreck.

The organization is haphazard at best, the Q&A format is confusing. They are purportedly questions that the author has received during his talks and lectures" Read more of this review »

Valorie Hallinan In recent weeks, I've read San Miguel, Flight Behavior, and Sweet Tooth, all excellent in their own way. Just wrote about Flight on Books Can Save a Life today (http://wp.me/p28JYl-qr) and will soon feature Ian McEwan's Sweet Tooth. All of these would make great Christmas gifts.
