Only an ideologue would deny that something happened over the last 15-years that has led to a huge increase among adolescents who never evidenced or spoke about any gender confusion. Historically it was primarily young boys who wished to be girls, but suddenly a 5000-fold increase in young girls began to identify as "trans" and we're supposed to just assume there's nothing here? They cherry pick and continue to use badly designed "studies" that refute the major meta-analyses that ALL agree that there has been a shift in the demographic among those identifying as "trans".

Never before in the history of psychotherapy was the notion that therapists should just affirm whatever the client might say. When I told my therapist I was depressed she asked me what made me think that... She was supportive without knee-jerkingly affirming everything I said. Nowadays, if a therapist simply asks a kid why they think they may be trans, activists equate such good therapy with the heinous conversion therapy that has been long shown to be harmful. The therapeutic process is designed to bring greater self-awareness and the ability to self-reflect by questioning and sometimes challenging the client. Imagine simply affirming a girls who has been starving herself and thinking she is obese!

And the very existence of a growing community of detransitioners should wake us all up to this travesty of quick unquestioning affirmation. Those countries that were most progressive regarding trans, such as Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark are following the scientific evidence and slowing down the move toward hormonal and surgical transition while here in America, due to the politicization of the trans issue, we see us digging in our heels even under the Trump administration's moves to curtail trans acceptance.

I know, love, and respect quite a few trans adults. The first transexual I ever knew was a friend of my mother's who would come to our house and co my mother's hair (as well as many of her friends' hair). This was when I was 5 so the whole thing was pretty normalized for me at an early age. I too experienced body dysmorphia and wanted and imagined I had a girl's body. This is something I grew out of (as the majority of kids who feel this way do -- until the rush to affirm) but I am pretty sure that if I were 8 years old now with those kinds of feelings I'd have been fast-tracked to a life of medicalization! Transitioning is serious business and should be left to adults who can rationally made decisions children simply do not have the understanding to make for themselves and the adults in the room should know that and not simply affirm without question and caution. ...more

I've never read a book quite like The Savage Detectives. Bolaños debut novel, published in 1998 made his reputation establishing himself as "the most influential and admired novelist of his generation in the Spanish-speaking world" according to Susan I've never read a book quite like The Savage Detectives. Bolaños debut novel, published in 1998 made his reputation establishing himself as "the most influential and admired novelist of his generation in the Spanish-speaking world" according to Susan Sontag. I was introduced to him via interviews with Patti Smith.

To say this book is about two poets searching for the woman who founded the movement they are part of, the "visceral realists" is to miss much of what this book is about. Among other things, it is a love story for poetry, literature in general, and the joys of reading. It is about the cultural history of Latin/Hispanic literature. There are pages listing authors that took me hours to read through because I looked them up. This is one reason it took me weeks to make it through this 577 page novel.

It's structure is unique to me. In three parts, Part One: "Mexicans Lost In Mexico (1975)" is the journal of a 17-year old poet named Juan García Madero that begins on November 2 with the declaration, "I've been cordially invited to join the visceral realists.. I accepted, of course. There was no initiation ceremony. It was better that way." This section is written in a fast-paced, almost breathless manner that is energetically youthful and conveys the self-absorption and urgency so common of young people. I certainly remember that. It is through his journal that we are introduced to the cast of characters, including the two "savage detectives" Ulises Lima and Arturo Belano (Bolaño's alter-ego, apparently), and melange of other poets and women Madero, the ever-ready teen horndog has sex with, sometimes writing the statistics of how many orgasms the woman has had compared to him: "Today I had sex with Rosario from three to five in the afternoon. She came twice, maybe three times, I don't know, and I'd rather leave the exact figure shrouded in mystery. I came twice."

Part One ends with a journal entry dated Dec 31st in a getaway with the pimp of the sex worker Lupe Madero has been spending time with firing after them and Lima and Belano.

Part Two, the longest section is entitled "The Savage Detectives (1976-1996). It features something like 50 different "narrators" apparently speaking to someone (or someones) who have all known or crossed paths with Lima and Belano. Some sections are quite short and some go on for pages. One, a lawyer sprinkles just about every other sentence with some Latin quote from antiquity and yes, I looked them all up, not knowing any Latin. Again, this added much time to my reading.

The first "interview" is with Amadeo Salvatierra in Mexico City in January 1976. His narrative is broken up in sections throughout this second part of the book and is among the more entertaining. Some of these and other "interviews" read like a stand-alone short story. Some are more fragmented. As the dates show, they span over 20 years. It is another vignette from Salvatierra that ends this part almost 400 pages later.

Part Three: "The Sonoran Desert (1976)" picks back up with Madero's journal dated the day after Part One ended in the car chase: "January 1: Today I realized that what I wrote yesterday I really wrote today: everything from December 31 I wrote on January 1, i.e., today, and what I wrote on December 30 I wrote on the 31st, i.e., yesterday. What I write today I'm really writing tomorrow, which for me will be today and yesterday, and also, in some sense tomorrow: an invisible day. But enough of that."

The story picks up with the four of them, Belano, Lima, Madero, and Lupe as they search for Cesárea Tinajero, the founder of the Visceral Realists who disappeared from the public in the 1930s.
