Emily Pritchard Cary is a native of Pittsburgh, but grew up in the Quaker town of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania where the quest for peace and love of one's fellow man guide the residents.

She graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania with majors in English and anthropology and a minor in music.

Throughout her teaching career in Pittsford, New York; Short Hills, New Jersey; and Fairfax, Virginia, she pursued graduate studies in archaeology, environmental science, education, and communication. A Gifted/Talented specialist, she was a Virginia State finalist for the 1985 NASA Teacher in Space Project.
